The promotion, which has not yet confirmed a venue for the event, announced the rematch on Saturday. Their first bout ended in controversy after Lawler inadvertently poked Smith in the eye. Doctors ruled that Smith was not fit to continue, despite his protests, and the match ended in a no contest before three rounds were complete. The fight had proven competitive up until the stoppage, though Lawler (15-4, 1-0 EXC) had landed the more punishing blows, including a series of first-round liver kicks that nearly had Smith doubled over in pain. Smith (13-4, 1-0 EXC) aside from the no contest has posted three wins in four fights. The hard-hitting Californian made a spectacular debut with the promotion in February, when he flattened Australian veteran Kyle Noke with a wicked right hand at EliteXC: Street Certified. Smith also counts victories against International Fight League middleweight contender Tim Kennedy and Matt Serra protégé Pete Sell among his conquests. Lawler, a former Pat Miletich understudy, will carry a four-fight winning streak into the rematch. Victories against former Icon Sport middleweight champion Frank Trigg, Jackson's Submission Fighting's Joey Villasenor and UFC welterweight veteran Chris Lytle highlight his resume. Lawler holds a dozen wins by knockout or technical knockout.
This card is supposed to be real big. Lawler-Smith 2 for the belt,Shields is supposed to fight for the Welterweight Championship agianst Drew Fickett,Paul Daley or Jay Hieron hopefully its Fickett. Then Antonio Silva is supposed to fight for the Heavyweight title vs Dave Herman,Brett Rogers or Roy Nelson.
But it's gonna happen the same day as Cotto/Margarito :tired It's frustrating being a fan of both MMA and Boxing.
This card is starting to come together. Looks like Jake Shields will fight Nick Thompson for the welterweight title and Antonio Silva will take on Sergei Kharitonov for the heavyweight title. Nick Diaz is also meant to be fighting on this card.
That is a very nice card. But now im pissed a very good free MMA card vs a fight of the year superfight in boxing but on PPV :huh
Which will you go for ? Just curious. I myself am debating hopefully I can record EXC and watch Margarito-Cotto because it is worth buying. Or maybe MAYBE I can catch boxing on sopcast while I record EXC.
