he looked good early in his career and fought some good fighters then he got beat off Clifford Etienne and went down hill and never really looked good
By the time he entered the pros he was a little on the old side, which limited his ability to move up much higher than he did.
Clay Bey was a great tough all action fighter, who would have benefitted greatly by staying in leaner shape.. That fight with Cliff was class...... Iceman Scully trained him for a while and i thought he may have made more noise.. After the Olympics , Lawrence had no desire to turn pro , but was convinced by a few hard nosed promoters that he could make a mark and even make some decent cash.. He was part of the original America Presents set up , which signed a few good heavyweights.... ie.. Mike Tyson, David Tua, Lance Whittacker, Monte Barrett, Duncan Dokiwari, Paea Wolfgramm.. It was a tight team while it lasted..... mirageboxing.blogspot.com
What a shame that he started boxing that late. He had amazing talent, but as Bigcat said he lacked desire. Reminded me much of James Toney in his boxing skills. Pure fun to watch. I think he could´ve won Olympic gold 1996, but was robbed against Klitschko.
Clay-Bey started boxing really late. I don't think he even turned pro until he was in his mid-30s. He had fine skills but didn't like to train and did not have enough height. Its a shame that he didn't start boxing earlier.
