2/27 @ the O2 in Greenwich. WBO cruiserweight title on the line, Okolie's second defense. The incumbent brings an undefeated record that includes a dodgy decision over countryman Matty Askin, as well as a knockout victory his last time facing a Pole. The challenger, meanwhile, has one professional defeat, in a previous world title match (for the WBC's green belt, versus Ilunga Junior Makabu) but under very questionable circumstances....on the road in enemy territory then, as he is now. They have a combined 29 stoppages in 40 bouts. The champion has a 2" height and 3½″ reach advantage - and probably ranks among the highest gorilla indices you'll find in the sport (+14cm, which is about 5½″)
Okolie. A lot of guys hate him but he is becoming a very good fighter, and ought to move up after this.
Goddamn,, with every fiber of my being I want to go with Cieślak here. Because I think he's got the grit, power and determination to pull it off, and possibly even the chin. Even when Makabu dropped him, he wasn't protecting himself and walking away, after what he thought was a foul. I think he thought the ref was going to dock Makabu a point. But Okolie's reach, height and hideous graboid English Ivy wall vine style, along with the dodgy scoring, no matter what Michał does, he's probably ****ed. So, either Okolie late TKO or UD. Although that may change before fight day, so I'm not committing to the poll yet.
What a bizarre take. Cieślak is arguably the best cruiserweight not currently holding a world title. At the very least, it'd be down to him or Dorticós. I don't like Okolie whatsoever but this is literally the best possible contender you could hope to ask him to face. Pushing it, maybe second best. The second line mightn't be the wrong idea should he get past Cieślak without any difficulty. Or even if he only squeaks by or gets a gift, all remaining at CW is going to mean is moderate risk for diminishing returns on reward. HW is the smart move for him, but... to imply that Cieślak isn't a worthy challenger or h2h threat and lumping him in with past opponents that "suck" (Głowacki doesn't; the rest you'll get no argument from me) - that's wild.
Okolie has looked a much improved fighter under McGuigan but Cieslak should be his stiffest challenge to date. He's a good boxer puncher with a solid chin, also quite large for a cruiserweight. I'd say if anyone has a good chance of beating Okolie at the weight it's between him and Briedis.
Okolie has many more tentacles which is a clear advantage so should win. Actually to be fair this is a decent fight and a solid opponent. Okolie is improving all the time though so i reckon will get late stoppage or UD. Early/mid stoppage would be very impressive.
