I wouldn't try it extensively unless I had it taught to me. It's much harder than it looks. I'd ask your coach for tips. But good luck.

Practice the shoulder roll against a lefty if you're right handed

If you can find Edwin L haislet's book on boxing, he has several sections on using the shoulder to defend against right hands. Also, back when (US) colleges had boxing teams, many of them published instructional manuals. San Jose St., in particular, taught this type of defense. Because it is not hard, it is easy. It is not advanced, it is the most basic and fundamental way of doing things.
What that guy is doing in that video is exactly how I've started every boxer I have ever worked with.

I find that odd considering the risk involved in that stance (no offense). A wrongly-timed roll can result in a clean right hand, whereas a high or mixed guard can still offer some protection most of the time, even when one is caught.

If your body is angled to begin with, you are essentially hiding behind your shoulder anyway. That will take the right hand; rolling it is just a matter of practice and if you start that way, it comes pretty readily. I suspect it would be more difficult trying to adopt it later on.
Even before I started going to the gym, and God knows I was no prodigy, it came naturally for me to take right hands off my shoulder. You can see the right hand coming for a long ways.

you must be stupid to try and learn the shoulder roll. All you need in amateur boxing is a good jab footwork and be able to be in balance all the time and throw punches to get points.

If you want to learn the shoulder roll, the first thing you need to do is correct your stance so that it is more sideways, this puts your left shoulder out in front more and you can hide you chin behind it more easily.

You're no mayweather or james toney though, keep those hands up.

I have mixed advice on this subject. This technique is by no means easy. But should not be intimidating at all. It's a subject that I would love to get into with more detail.
But in short, try it. Get hurt. If the juice is worth the squeeze, then broaden your skills. You do need a trainer though.

lets be honest, you can't teach yourself to box without a trainer. So theres no way you can teach yourself to use the shoulder roll effectively and properly

This vid from expert boxing is pretty decent.

This guy is a southpaw, but in the next vid, the chick he is uses in the demo is a southpaw as well so just switch it over if you are a righty.

This defense would be great for you since you have shoulder of steele.
