Because it would have showed he tried to connect, it says something about the fighters intent. In Johnson's case however it was indeed merely flailing his arms towards Vitali instead of truly punching. I admit it's not equal. Haye was a bit less shitty than Johnson.
It tells me a lot, that the only people defending Haye's shitfest are British, because the only reason you're defending it is chauvinism. I'm not German buddy.
Judges scoring fights on 'workrate' is ruining boxing  Take Williams/ Martinez for example. In round 11 Williams lands 32, Martinez 33. Nobody would argue that Martinez laned the cleaner, more effective punches. Yet Williams, at least according to one judge, wins the round :huh Walking forward and flurrying at thin air is NOT effective aggression. You can make an argument in a case like Calzaghe/ Hopkins where one guys is shoeshining and one is throwing only a couple of punches a round, but Martinez and Williams landed the same number of punches.
No it wouldn't, it would show that his work was less measured, with less thought behind it and he was relying on the law of averages that some of the punches he was flinging about must find the target. Haye's 'intent' was to find the target with every punch, make everyone count and not waste any. Again, I fail to see why that is inferior. The more we get into this, the more I really start to wonder about what you value in a boxer.
I don't have punch stats, but i'd be surprised if Briggs averaged more than 20 per round against Liakhovic. What a stinker, especially if you consider that Liakhovic' fight before that was perhaps the heavyweight battle of the decade with Brewster. Doesn't beat Haye vs Valuev though. That record will stand for a long time.
Without a doubt Haye. Threw 143 punchs. Pathetic and got the wba title. Evander should be the wba champ. He actually fought and beat Valuev for the title.
Because the total number is pathetic. By that logic you could throw one single punch, and you'd win the title as long as the other person landed none. I expect at least a bit offensive mindedness. Don't get me wrong I like defensive boxing off the back foot, but this went far beyond defensive boxing, it was just being defensive period.
But why would you value 'offensive mindedness' over actually hitting your opponent? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Fighter A throws 400 punches and lands 80. Fighter B throws 100 punches and lands 90. Which has fought more credibly?
I think Haye won, I just don't have any respect at all for the way he did it. Pathetic, embarrassing, those are the terms that come to mind.
