Henry Armstrong is probably one of the 5 greatest fighters of all time and he wasnt a huge puncher, particularly fast, or particularly skilled. He just could outwork you like there was no tomorrow, and knew how to keep pressure.
Bernard Hopkins also has no incredible physical gifts and yet wins fights due to outstanding ring smarts.
Holmes wasn't fast-handed for a heavyweight? I beg to differ. Actually, i don't beg. I just differ. Holmes also had one of the all-time greatest jabs of any weight class.
Hopkins' reflexes, timing and ring savvy are extraordinary skills. You're just not talking about the 'traditional' skills: hand speed, footspeed, etc. Holmes' jab, one of the greatest ever, is certainly a skill. Ask Cooney's nose.
Well, i think people are talking just about raw talents. Ring savvy and timing is something you can improve upon. Raw skills aren't. Hopkins was nothing special in terms of raw talent.
Danny Lopez: 10 succesful title defenses, took zero's away from 4 guys including Sean O'Grady, 39 of 42 wins came by knock out, and was always extremely exciting to watch. The only thing he did exceptionally well was throw punches. In the Ayala fight he threw something like 1350 punches! For the younger fans who may not remember "Little Red" this guy used to get knocked down so often the joke was that he planned his knock outs from the seat of his pants! Boo
I think a better way to word the question would be fighter who you consider an ATG with the least raw talent.
Pavlik might be able to get on this list if he keeps on winning and puts together a good legacy. Outside of his great power, he's nothing special in terms of raw talent.
I named Danny Lopez, and now you bring up Pavlik. That's ironic because in many ways Kelly reminds me of a giant sized Lopez! Boo
