I’ve never understood Sharkey’s moniker. Do you?

    Hi Buddy.
Firsty, compliments on your posts and manners, would that a few of your contemporaries were as polite.
So Joseph Zukauskas was given the nickname " Gob " by the press, because he had a tendency to whine and complain, when events didn't quite go his way, he was a very temperamental fighter, and fought with his emotions at the fore, on his best day a hard night for most, on his worst day he couldn't or wouldn't give of his best, he is often ranked alongside Willard and Carnera as a poor champion, people have their own views on his ranking and worth, hope this small post enlightens you a tad.
    stay safe Romero, chat soon.

    That’s my understanding also Scar.

I dived deeper on it some years back to get the heart/source of the word GOB - its etymology.

One answer was that sailors were known for gobbling their food. The other was that sailors smoked or chewed tobacco and were prone to spitting (out gobs or out of their gobs).

Lastly, a gob might be considered a lump of whatever. Not too flattering.

Anyway, knowing that Sharkey was in the Navy, imagine if he instead acquired the nickname The Boston Gobbler whilst in the services?

Boy, that nickname and where it was acquired from would’ve been open to some unfortunate misinterpretations.

Wimpy Halstead has to be the absolute antithesis to the implication of threat.

“Doc” Anderson. Drs are supposed to help and save people, not hurt them.

Unless they’re one of those Drs who euthanise people - then it makes some sense.

I would forever be a fan of any fighter brave enough to wear the moniker "The Cringing Chicken."

I wish someone would snap that one up.

The Cleveland Rubber Man sounds like one of those cheap, rubbish horror movies that were coming out back-to-back just a few years ago, Slender Man, Bye-Bye Man, etc. Although I quite enjoyed The Empty Man.

Napoles's nickname sort of makes sense. Mantequilla means butter -- and he was slick.

Mantequila at least sounds good if you don’t know what it means.
