If he is never better at any weight then Ali was at heavy then Ali was the better fighter.

The problem with this is that it is based entirely upon your analysis of a given fighter and his skills at one particular weight. You aren't weighing resumes, you are weighing skillsets. You exclude massive swathes of tremendous wins in the most adversarial of circumstances and exclude them from consideration.

I can see here that the obvious debate has occurred- subjevtiveness. When weighing up all aspects i wouldnt personally exclude Ali from my own, though its not a list i would like to compile, i like to stick to the weight by weight lists. The feats of such greats as Greb, Langford, Walcott etc. who have taken on much larger men and won, are astonishing. Then i can see the argument for Ali, who was absolutely briilliant in terms of effectiveness, and has a great resume. Like i say, its so subjective.

Based on resume (which includes the situation of each win such as winning above a fighter's best weight, past prime, etc) and how I percieve each as far as overall skill and ability, I'd say Ali just cracks the top 10 probably at #8, and I would personally put Louis in the top 20, closer to 15 though.

I don't really see the argument for Louis being a top 10 all-time, and Ali could be argued outside of it quite easily IMO.

The only guys I feel are certainly above Ali are Robinson, Langford, Greb, Armstrong, Duran, Charles, and I would say Pep although I could see the case for Ali based on resume. There are a few others who I wouldn't argue with over Ali, but those are the only guys I feel should always be above any Heavyweight that spent his entire career there.

So with this thinking there is no way Hagler could be rated over Hearns. Hearns moved up and won many titles while Hagler stayed at one weight and his best wins came against smaller fighters. I would think that the great majority of boxing fans would easily rank Hearns higher then Hagler.

Thats it in a nutshell if a guy moved up but was never better than Ali was at heavy then Ali is the greater fighter period. Why penalize a heavy who has nowhere to move.

then what is greatness? moving up in weight and having a great skillset! I think that is total bull****, skillset means nothing. I favor effectivesness and dominance over skillset. I favor courage, brains, guts, and determination over a slick jab any day. Then on paper Ezzard Charles always beats Marciano...
Today Zab Judah would be undefeated on paper. Boxing is and always be about fighting, the better fighter is the one who can impose his strengths and dominate. Greatness, I guess we have to figure out what constitutes greatness in a fighter. Skillsets and moving up in weight and having success doesnt equate to greatness, you can never be great without the intangibles that what seperates the Greats (Ali) from the very Good (Jones)

I meant the great majority of boxing fans would rate Hagler over Hearns.

There's nothing criminal about leaving either out of a top 10 list. The way i rate fighters I can't really see the case for Louis in the top 10, and if Ali does have a case, he probably has it for a lower spot in the 10.

Nope. All-time-greatness is about resume, accomplishment and things like that. A p4p list is a h2h list. That´s no way the same.

    No. Read above.

Also a no. The higher the weight the less important it is.

No! P4p is h2h when all the fighters would be the same weight. That´s something totally differen.

So where does guys like marciano rate at 185lb? what other 185lbers in history beat him? does this mean we rate him higher p4p or do we just rate him as a heavyweight?
