Great showing by Groves, delighted for him and happy he got the nod even though I had it to DeGale. Still came away from the fight thinking that DeGale is the superior fighter though. Hopefully he'll ditch McDonnell and come back stronger but he won't be easy, you'd think this loss will hurt DeGale massively and it could easily send him the other way. Will be fascinating to see how he comes back from it.

Im quite shocked at degayle, he found it hard to press groves and had to throw some elbows in there..
Warren will get rid of Jimmy McD's pronto..

    I agree, neither were impressive.

You had Groves who was running out of gas towards the end and looked vulnerable, frail actually. Any time Degale sustained even a few slaps he looked wobbly. He's going to get blown away very quickly by a puncher, hes no way near strong enough in this division. The guys at the top are physical monsters, this guy is like a kid. The one thing DeGale had was he was coming on strong and took everything Groves had well.

Degale's footwork and arrogance early in the fight were shocking. There wasn't really any sustained effort to get close where he was always getting the better of it. I don't know whether thats fed by the backslapping team around him or a pure tactical error I don't know, but it was poor ring IQ all the same to not figure it out quicker. In the end it cost him.

All this said, I still scored it for DeGale and he lost by a single point on two cards so no need to go overboard. It wasn't a Prescott job but his weaknesses as far as footwork and punch technique were shown up and he needs a new trainer. Simple as that. Groves needs to carry on what he was doing, realistically he's improved a lot simply by not feinting ridiculous amounts and wasting energy. Also he kept a tighter guard which was smart. I don't think Groves' tools are that great and they got a lot out of him tonight.

fair play to Jonny Nelson, he managed to make comments on the fight, even though at the same time he was sucking James DeGale's **** whilst receiving a finger or 2 up the arse from Adam Smith.

    Cheers Jonny, true pro!

    Ps; you talk utter ****.

DeGale lost - so by ESB standards he either needs a new trainer or a move up/down in weight...or both.

Good thing for Frankie Gavin that DeGale lost. He is gonna be pushed alot quicker by Warren now, British title shot sooner rather than later.

He needed a new trainer 10 fights ago to be honest. Jim McDonnell is mostly famous as a trainer for his amazingly inept work with Danny Williams.

You still think McDonnell is the right man for him then?

DeGale needs a new trainer, badly.

DeGale was fighting George Groves and Adam Booth single-handedly.

And I still thought DeGale won.

Degale by a couple of points for me... he landed the meaningful punches throughout the fight. that been said it was still pretty tight and I can see why people have scored it to Groves. He clearly surprised Degale in the early rounds with his tactics and credit must go to him and Booth.

I'm not saying that he is or isn't - just that the trainer or weight division is the first thing people seem to jump on.
