Denis Lebedev Scores Brutal Last-Round KO Over A Game Roy Jones Junior

by James Slater - East Side Boxing Forum - 22nd May 2011

Tonight in Moscow, Russia (or this afternoon in the U.S), the career of one the finest boxers of the last 20 years surely came to an end, as cruiserweight contender Denis Lebedev scored a scary-looking 10th-round stoppage over 42-year-old legend Roy Jones Junior.

The end came in the final seconds of the 10th, as the 31-year-old southpaw suddenly burst into life. A right hook to the head was the last in a series of shots that caught Jones and, as ref Steve Smoger dived in, Jones collapsed to the mat. It was a frightening scene, but thankfully Roy got to his feet later and looked okay. Doubtless he will be taken to hospital for a thorough check-up.

The official time was 2 minutes and 50-seconds. Lebedev is now 22-1(17), Jones is now 54-8(40).

Jones, who was taking a huge risk even by taking this fight, looked good in spurts and he proved a lot of people wrong merely by lasting as long as he did. Even winning a few rounds as Lebedev appeared to be giving him too much respect, Jones proved he would have all but toyed with the Russian in his prime. But those days are now long gone; as is Jones’ ability to take a good shot.

The final, brutal blows he took tonight would have taken just about anyone out, however, and many fans were critical of Smoger’s slowness in getting in to halt the beating.

Fellow ageing legend Bernard Hopkins faces his own tough test tonight, in the form of light-heavyweight king Jean Pascal. Can B-Hop go one better than Jones? Or will the careers of two all-time greats end today?

As for Lebedev, he is said to want a fight with Australia’s Danny Green next; assuming of course, Green can get past that other 40-something in Antonio Tarver!

I have always had been a huge fan of Roy at his best and in his prime i dont think there was a fighter I wanted to watch more, but over many years I have always been frustrated when Great Boxers keep going back to the well,Greats like Duran,Ali and jones Junior to name a few very sad when you see Legends like this get destroyed by fighters who should not be mentioned in the same breath when it comes to Class and achievments.

For god sake Roy put the cue in the rack your making a fool of yourself.!!!!

He may be making more than a fool of himself Steel.

He's already showing the early physical and mental wear and tear signs that suggest old age is going to be very unpleasant for him.

CHB one of the sadest things I have ever seen was Larry Holmes V Ali fight you could see Ali was finished and when he was on the ropes ducking and weaving like an old Man who did not know where he was it was sickening,to many greats go back to the well to many times, and that fight was one of the most disturbing I have ever seen.!!!!
This is what going to the well to many times does, add old age and early onset of Parkinsons I always get a horrible feeling in my Gut when I see this.!!!

I watched the fight, what the **** was Smoger thinking at the end? Roy was out already and he just stood there and let the Ruski put another one on his chin.
Roy got hurt BAD in round 5 from a jab, at the end Roy said he doesnt give up that easily and he still may fight...... Poor guy is punchy already
KOstya called out GReeny at the end, predictably

Lebedev isn't impressive at all, if the fight went another ten seconds I think the winner would've been very hard to pick. That was heartbreaking to watch, the whole fight I was just hoping that Roy would be alright, he actually looked good when he wasn't on the ropes. When the final round came I was just cheering for him to see the end of the fight, would've been a victory in itself. He needs to give it up but as he says he has the heart of a champion, I really don't think he's afraid of being killed in the ring and he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him.

Always been a huge fan of RJJS, i hope he hangs them up otherwise he is going to end up punch drunk. Did anyone else find it odd that the ref just let him lay there on his stomach and never rolled him over?
