Lederman says Monzon v Foster would've been Fight Of The Century!

I dont think Foster is anywhere near as good as most people rate him. This would be a very good fight, but i think that Monzon wins a close points decision or late round knockout.

 

I agree completely that Monzon has no chance here. Giving him a chance is overrating him IMO.
I disagree that he was overrated in general. I think the crop of guys he beat was a little better than Hagler's lot and I think Valdez was a very, very good fighter.
Do you rate Hagler higher than him? I don't really have a problem with that, just curious and interested in your viewpoint.

 

Foster has the physical advantages and another league of power, but Monzon's chances should not be so easily abandoned.

Monzon was the smarter fighter, meaning he was a better judge and instigator of boxing. If we take the younger Monzon from 1970 who had more zest about him then we've got ourselves a good one.

Carlos always utilized a high guard to catch any flak, which would be very useful against Foster's whipping hooks. He is not hopelessly out matched like Tiger was - his build would allow him to contend here - threaten with the jab and look for his honey punch.

Monzon would not dive in, put himself in a stupid position and suffer, he would stick to his guns and pick his spots while creaking back and looking for openings. Monzon could box on the back foot and when younger he had an assertive vigour about him that could close a gap in a hurry.

Chris Finnegan demonstrated how useful straight punches could be against the loose guard of Foster, and while Chris moved differently from Monzon, Carlos makes up for it with his class of delivery.

Foster is still the natural favourite here, but there is definitely a way for the great Argentinean to wrangle a decision or, dare Ted Spoon say it, ground Foster down later on.

 

Foster is supremely overrated head to head, one of those fighters many think could take most, yet when it comes to ranking pound for pound they choke at his placing.

I genuinely think Carlos wins this one over a UD, but then I would say that.

 

there is a reason why monzon never moved even though he was a big mw. foster had too much power for him, he knocks him out after some competive rds.

 

I think Foster knew where he belonged allright ,he just chased the money.
The Light heavies were rarely the big earners ,unless they moved up and took on the big boys.

Foster by KO, I cant see Monzon`s style being anywhere near as effective vs an ATG 175 lber like Foster as it was vs the 160 lbers where Carlos almost always had the physical advantages....

But yes, it would have been a great fight until Bob took him out, very fascinating fight.

I agree with you Ted Spoon..the most persistently misunderstood and underrated GREAT fight has to be Carlos Monzon. I'm not talking head to head here, as I've stated in an earlier post that Monzon's natural weight class, like Hagler's was, and they both had the wisdom to stay there..I believe Monzon, while not the up-front power puncher that Foster was, he was nonetheless the better fighter, and again, an underrated, CLEVER fighter, much more so than Foster..and your Finnegan analogy makes sense.

 

True, lacking the glamor of the middles or the heavies, Foster must have felt he had no choice but to go get coldcocked once in a while by the heavies.

 

I too don't see Monzon winning this one either. Foster is too tall and too powerful. By too tall I mean that Monzon was accustomed to fighting shorter fighters as he was a big MW. That's not a rap on his opposition (Napoles/Valdez et al.) who were quality fighters. It's just in Foster he would be meeting an opponent who is as tall if not taller, equally skilled (Or close enough anyway) and packs a more powerful punch. Monzon liked to fight from a distance and wear his opponents down before stopping them or taking the decision. Against Foster he wouldn't be able to do that. Monzon was also somewhat methodical in his approach. Foster was a bit quicker both in feet and hands and this would force Carlos out of his "comfort zone" if you will. Carlos would have to get in there and fight which would make for a very entertaining match while it lasts but eventually Bob would catch him with a corker or two and that would be all she wrote.
