Lederman says Monzon v Foster would've been Fight Of The Century!

I think Carlos gives up his height and reach advantage and being a natural 160lber would be carrying weight that was just extra luggage but then again Carlos was slim and the weight could have enhanced his power and strength like it did Bernard Hopkins. Many middleweights moved up to Light Heavy and were succesfull. Dick Tiger, Jose Torres, to mention a few. Carlos had a good chin and I would not sell him short but Foster was 175lbs of power but that was his max weight, no more no less and he was one of the greats at that weight....Carlos has no history there

 

Seeing the power Foster could generate at light-heavy + Monzon being slightly susceptible to the right hand equals a win for Big Bob. A natural light-heavy (and one of the stronger ones at that) is needed to beat a prime Foster. He's too powerful at the weight and I don't think this match-up was seriously mooted back in the day either, like the Conteh fight was. But the WBC kncoked that into a cocked hat during the negotiation stage.

The 175 division was just too strong during the 1970s and early 1980s- arguably its heyday. A decade or so later stepping up a weight or two would have meant easy pickings vs the Murray Sutherland's and Leslie Stewart's of the world (it may as well have been Donald Sutherland and Rod Stewart instead for all the chance they'd have had against Monzon).

One aspect of Monzon's style that is easily forgotten was his ability to tie up and nullify his oppoents punches. Monzon was one of the best at taking away his opponent's best punch and rendering it ineffective. John Ruiz, horribly and pathetically tries to use Monzon's tactics. I believe Monzon's skills are being seriously cheapened by disgusting, ugly fighters like John Ruiz.

With that being said, I don't know if he'd be able to continually tie up and frustrate Bob Foster's right hand. Monzon does have enough skills to hurt Foster and probably wobble him, but I'd bet on Foster taking a close 15 round decision in a tough fight.
