By Ring Magazine's estimation, Lee Oma was the #2 heavyweight boxer in the world in 1949. All told, he made Ring's year-end top 10 list 4 times in the mid-40s and early 50s. Where would he rank/how would he fare in today's division? The 2016 end-of-year rankings: Tyson Fury, Champion Wladimir Klitschko Deontay Wilder Kubrat Pulev Luis Ortiz Anthony Joshua Joseph Parker Bermane Stiverne David Haye Andy Ruiz Jr. Dillian Whyte
Oma was a big time party guy who went hot/cold and was willing to fight anybody as many times as he was paid to. He would probably get a huge upset win only to get blown out in his next bout to a lesser guy. Just how he was. He got rated highly a few times but was rarely a stand out guy in the division. He would pickup big wins that get those ratings or get on a good streak than crash and burn. Because of the careful management of the modern era, we don't see too many streaky guys like this anymore. With regards to the current top 10, I have no idea. Wilder is the #2 HW but I don't know how to rate him. He's only fought one guy on that list in Stiverne.
Oma didn't have much power or a great chin, he was ko'd by journeymen, and seldom in top shape. I don't think he would make a dent in today's ranking.
It works both ways. How many of today's ranked SHWs would be so "SHW" in Lee Oma's day? Back in the 1950s and 1940s there was not a contender who did not meet the current US army height, age to weight requirements. This is rarely the case now as many big guys are too heavy for their own height and would fail entry into the military today based on this. So this needs to be factored in when we decide weight is a big issue when comparing eras. We have to look at what a guy would be if he were in that era.
Lee Oma probably beats Mark DeMori and Arnold Garbage. Is that enough to get ranked ? He might beat a few of those guys Deontay Wilder defended against. I think he might beat Derrick Rossy. Can that get him ranked ? Please ? But the good thing is, once he's rated he can just give up boxing altogether and sit on his ranking, maybe enter the ring every 18 months or so.
Yeah, that's my thinking. It's not like he would be fighting any of the guys on that list on a regular basis. Oma beats Ray Austin, Tor Hamer, David Price, Arreola, Malik Scott, and sits on a top 10 rating.
How does he beat Malik Scott? I don't see it. Not sure that beating the 2017 versions of those other guys would be enough to get you a top 10 spot.
Scott has advantages over Oma in size (height, reach, mass), speed, and skill. What advantages does Oma bring? In 2017, most of those men are no longer respected at all as even legitimate fringe contenders--they're journeymen at best.
and Oma has advantages in not being ****ing terrible. Oma at least has one decent filmed showing against in all time great. So? Take it up with RING magazine for making guys top 10 for beating them. I guess they have to rate somebody for beating somebody.
Are you saying that you though Oma looked good in the Charles fight? Scott would have jabbed and potshotted that version of Oma to death.
