A few days off 39 years old. Obviously completely washed up and carrying no power. What could possibly go wrong ? Did you see Degales face after his one ( and probably only ) BK fight ? Could not understand the things his opponent was doing. That's what happens when you're used to world class amateurs and pros and you're thrown in with a clueless ( albeit tough ) Aussie who does nothing you've previously experienced in the boxing ring. It's like trying to reason with a lunatic. You won't get far quoting Shakespeare with them.
I thought he was one who wasn't too enamoured with boxing and saw it more as a job (or maybe that was Andrew Selby); but ultimately if his heart was no longer in boxing then taking away the gloves probably doesn't change that.
My god. Liked this lad, thought he was really good! As alluded to above, why on earth are these feather fisted lads doing this!?
Used to be a lad in school who’d never played footy in his life, bit gangly, he didn’t know what foot he was. Absolutely garbage he was but it worked for him half the time he’d cut in, all limbs drop the wrong shoulder by accident, send lads who’d been playing their whole lives at alright level the wrong way, on either foot swing luckily would end up smashing in off the bar haha. There are defo instances inboxing when it is like as you say. Can imagine even more in these freak show fights we are seeing.
Still a bit surprised that ex world champions seem to be struggling at bkb. I get their over the hill and most of them are non punchers but i m still expecting full time ex pro,s to be able to handle part time fighters without too much hassle. These are guys that have dedicated their whole life to fighting. Suspect what we,re seeing is guys taking roids versus ex boxers that arent. In my mind part time fighters that do it as a bit of a hobby would struggle to get far with an ex boxer unless the ex boxer is absolutly rinsed from a hard career etc.
Strategy is different, protecting the hands, cuts and pacing yourself. BKB is very offence orientated and the ref doesn't break the fight up so the rounds can seem more intense. You can also hold and strike in the clinch, the ref wont jump in and break it up like in boxing. Of course it's a good base but it's not quite as simple as good at boxing good at BKB they need to do specific training for a decent amount of time.
With that all being said and totally great points i still think its a fetch their beating up ex world champion boxers. I know some of these guys have fight experience etc but none of them seem to have made grounds for top level careers in that fight experience. Guys that done a bit of fighting as a hobby are beating up on guys that spent year after year training and fighting full time that got to the top of their game. I m either overestimating ex world champions, underestimating the bkb or their on the peds to bridge the gap that there should be. Too many people just start taking training a bit seriously...and a year down the line their ready to fight an ex champion etc. Its not really how it works. Literally thousands of kids try boxing and find out you need talent to get to where they want to get to. Talent seems to be in abundance nowadays. You can literally sit on the couch for years before deciding at 26 you want to be a fighter. A year later your making waves. I m saying its got to be peds. But who knows with any kind of certainty anyway.
If he can do it the way that Austin Trout has managed he may be ok, he uses his defensive skills to avoid getting involved with the clinch, targets the body 1st couple of rounds then goes for the head. I mean trout wasn't a big puncher in the boxing ring either.
By the time they get to the bkb no. i think thats half the problem. If they we,re using once upon a time their not currently trying to fight guys that are. Pretty sure the standards for testing in boxing is also a lot higher than bkb. I m not actually sure most boxers are doped anyway. I m not really seeing anything in the ring that makes me think their doing anything impressive enough anyway. On the other hand bullying an ex world champion boxer when your a fighter that does it as a bit of a hobby sets off far more alarm bells to me. Open to being wrong tho.
The thing is Austin Trout was still reasonably active and in the gym when he went to bkb from boxing. I think he even had another pro boxing match after his bkb debut. Just that makes a massive difference from what the likes of Gavin, Cox, Degale and now Selby are doing. Being old, past it, inactive, out of shape and not having your heart in it are not to be underestimated. Turning up half arsed for a quick few quid and fighting well above your prime weight class against younger, motivated, naturally bigger men who live in the gym and want to take your head off is usually only going to end one way. Regardless of how good you used to be.
