ESPN Boxing has an orgy of Andy Lee stories today here is a good one.

Put your ear to the thin wall of boxing's inner circle and you'll hear some interesting stuff.

If you can get past the promoter bashing, manager lies and fighter excuses, you may uncover really juicy gym talk. Stories of sparring wars revealing monstrous can't-miss prospects are my favorites.

For the past few years, one name that has been the center of the chatter seems to be Andy Lee (15-0, 12 KOs).

The Irish-born, Kronk-trained southpaw middleweight is making his Friday Night Fights debut this week (ESPN2 Friday, 9 p.m. ET). Lee will be taking on Brian Vera, whom we got to know on the third season of "The Contender." Truth be told, he's fighting against both hype and expectations.

"I see in the very near future, within the next 12 months, Andy Lee becoming the middleweight champion of the world," said Emanuel Steward.

I've seen a few of his fights here in Detroit including his pro debut and I have to agree he seems to have all the tools to go to the top,the only test left is his chin. I have'nt seen him get hit with anything of circumstance yet so it's hard to say how he would handle getting hurt in a fight, but he's exciting as hell to watch.

Being Irish myself I would love to see Lee become middleweight champ. And with Manny in his corner and steering his career, Lee couldn't be in better hands. I beleive Lee can become champ, but he should maybe wait until 2009 before tackling Pavlik.:yep

I agree. From the very first time I saw him, I got the same inner reaction I had the first time I saw Pavlik a couple years ago. You can just see that he is special.

Seems to have most of the physical tools but appears a bit upright. Time will tell.

Who knows? We will even watch a rematch between Golovkin and Lee at the pros. Olympic silver medal winner Golovkin schooled him at the amateurs. He had turned pro in the meantime, too.
I would be happy to watch Lee rematch Golovkin at the pros.
Golovkin has been tougher matched in his first 8 pro fights than Lee,but Lee has more pro fights and faced better competition.

Emmanuel Steward is going to rush Lee into a fight he can't handle and severely hamper his progress.

I think Lee will become super middle and light heavy champ as well. Good defense, foot work, hand speed, power and incredible combos and accuracy.

this kid has some serious potential, but I'd like to see how he does against a top 10 middleweight(I would kill to see him and Duddy with the winner getting a title shot)...oh...sorry...my Irish is showing:hat

sturm isnt much to worry about, unless you are fighting him in germany ... abraham is very much an unknown quantity at world level while we all know what kelly pavlik is all about ... imo he is ready for anyone the middleweight has to offer.

Let me make it clear that I like Andy Lee, and I think he is one of the most promising prospects in boxing today. However, Lee's best win to date was over Carl Daniels. Daniels lost to both Codrington and Spina, and lost 6 fights in a row before the Lee fight.

I expect Andy to walk through Vera tonight with relative ease. I think the Rubio fight on June 7th will tell us a lot more about Andy than tonights fight will. If he wins against Rubio, that would be a good indicator that he is ready for Sturm, but it would not mean that he is ready for Abraham or Pavlik.

When I compare Pavlik's resume to Lee's I have to ask myself; "Where is the Zuniga type opponent, where is the McKart type opponent, where is the equivalent of Zertuche or Miranda?" Assuming that Andy beats Vera and Rubio convincingly that would give him a record of 17-0, and Daniels, Vera, and Rubio would be his biggests wins.

Now let's assume that Pavlik beats Lockett by KO as most people expect. That will elevate Pavlik to 34-0 with 30 KO's. His best wins would be Zuniga, McKart, Zertuche, Miranda, and Taylor X 2.

And then there are other factors. Lee is a southpaw. Pavlik has one of the best lead rights in the business. Lee leaves his body wide open on the left side at times. Pavlik has demolished guys with lead rights to the body. Andy has never had his chin checked. Pavlik will check that chin repeatedly. Andy has never fought anybody with a jab like Kelly's, and that is not going to change in the Vera and Rubio fights. If Andy can't deal with Pavlik's jab, he'll get knocked out by mid rounds because Pavlik sets up his best work off the jab.

Someone needs to tell Manny Steward that Andy ain't ready. I realize Andy does extremely well against top-level sparring partners in the gym. However, if you put Andy Lee in a title fight with Kelly Pavlik, The Ghost ain't comin' to spar. He's coming to break his opponent down emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and then physically. Just as Manny said before the first Taylor fight; "There are no surprises with Kelly Pavlik." There are no surprises with a freight train either, but that does not mean you can stop it from runnin' over your ass!

I would much rather see Pavlik/Lee in 18 months. That would give Lee time to fight better opposition. In my opinion Andy needs a lot more rounds of boxing against decent opposition before he tries Pavlik on.

Stewart said Pavlik couldn't beat Taylor in their first fight too. He hyped
Taylor to the hilt...... Didn't help in the 7th..... I think Stewart would be best sticking to training and let the promoters do their job. Being unrealistic doesn't help the fighter. Old Cal just showed that. I agree about rushing Lee to slaughter. If he goes in too early and loses, how long before he could get another title shot? If ever if Kelly continues to make weight? He'd drop in the rankings to guys that haven't had their shot yet. Hey, maybe Stewart is still hoping to get to be Kelly's trainer after all? ;)

I wonder how the sparring went between him and Jermain.
