In pure boxing terms it will surely be Usyk. However, I feel GGG also has a legacy in paving the way for other Eatern European fighters. Without the success of GGG I think promoters would have been less willing to take chances on the likes of Usyk and Lomachenko (although most of Usyk's success thus far has been in Eastern Europe).
This is hard to answer. They are in different points in their careers. Although GGG was in a weak era of middleweights, he dominated. But this question is like asking in 1985 -l. Hagler or Curry. In 10 years who will be rated higher. In 1985 some might have thought Curry. Now we know that did not happen.
That's a fair view. If GGG had the backing to get bigger fights earlier on, it would've helped him tremendously. For getting a real push as late as he did, what he achieved was still remarkable, but there's still a sense of unfulfilled potential at what could have been had he landed some key fights. Usyk's career will be superior in part to getting the opportunities GGG never could until the twilight of his career. Heck, one could argue his resume is already superior in less than half the fights.
Great post, this. Usyk is onto a flaming start and if he keeps his course he's going to be ahead. GGG should still be champion though and most people know it.
As much as I love Golovkin, and am probably a weirdo, passionate fan that possesses everything there is about Golovkin including his jock strap, I think Usyk is more naturally talented than he is.
Big fan of both but i probablt have Usyk already ahead of GGG and with longer left to go in career. Wins over Gassiev, Briedis, Glowacki, Hunter and Bellew is a great resume that trumps Canelo x 2, Jacobs, Lemeuix, and Brook.
Off course it's Usyk. He started getting the respectable opponents inside the ring with him much earlier in his career than Golovkin. Also his skillset has a bit higher ceiling.
Agreed. There are actually some moronic forum pukes like Drenloser (King Of Cali) that don’t think all of GGG’s title defenses were legit and actually thinks Clenelo’s draw and Win were legit as well. But the fact is he would have the middleweight record right now if it wasn’t for Fishnets paying for BS corruption. Even if Triple G got his rightful record and victories in the past two fights it still would be hard for him to top Usyk’s accomplishments though. I’m a fan of both.
Id say Usyk but GGG aint no hype job. Hes beaten Canelo twice, Jacobs, Geale, Lemieux, Murray, Macklin, Munroe, Brook and Vanes. Hes had a quality career.
If Usyk makes a big impact at HW then it would be him. But we've really no idea how he will do. So it's up in the air. I've got massive respect for both fighters and both are legends to me already.
Seems a very unfair thread in alot of ways as Usyk has been fortunate to be in a competition that was bringing forward many of the top CWs and also got to face unbeaten champions (many will say a loss doesnt mean a thing but then rate fighters based on undefeated records). He was also able to get the big Bellew fight in the UK. So yes I expect Usyk will be the fighter who gets the higher recognition years later, but as with many things, opportunities have to be available and I dont know if Golovkin had the same opportunities available? Im a fan of Usyk but have to say they are both very good fighters
