Do you agree with me?! I think he had potential and did show some but guy did it wrong way. He is hard to judge him because we dont know did he gave his all, did he show all his potential. This all Hurts Joe's Legacy BIG TIME. Thoughts?
What should he have done and when? I'm looking for specific fights that could have been made, results that could have been expected, consequences that could have followed, not 'go to America and kick all teh ass'. For the record, I'm not expecting a coherent or informed answer, but one has to keep up to expectations. If you're lucky I'll pop back in 24 pages to ask again.
Although, as you've asked a specific question, I'll answer it. Clearly Calzaghe didn't do everything wrong legacy-wise. Delaney was the best option career-wise in 1996. Eubank was the best fight for his legacy in 1998. Nothing wrong with fighting the likes of Reid, Woodhall, Sheika, Mitchell, Brewer. Lacy was the best legacy fight for him in 2006. Kessler was the biggest fight available in 2007. Hopkins was top four P4P and far and away the best legacy fight available in 2008.
Agreed he had massive skills but was not prepared to crawl across glass and humble himself a bit in order to force himself into the limelight earlier. Not that he should have to if he was happy as he was, but he eventually came to want world to see him as best, so it would have benifitted his desire imo.
another day another Calzaghe thread. the bloke is the best 168 pounder ever a 2 weight world champion and was the man at 168 & 175. Continue hating the guy because at the end of the day I doubt he gives a ****, he cleaned up and became a millionaire, better than some of the mongs on this board have ever achieved.
Im sorry but he might suffer the " Sven Ottke syndrome" when it comes to his legacy. And that is sad cause Joe Hand more potential than Ottke:huh But his career over all, it isl ike with Ottke
I want to add that he shouldnt have to walk on glass and he didnt do anything bad, he beat all who challenged and took the best options. To make his eventual resume better he would have had to go fight other champions scraps to force them to fight him. Something very very few champions would do. And at times he did try to reach out to makke fights with people like Hopkins, but it was Hopkins that ducked away. Ok you could argue he should have persisted but can we really flame calzaghe foir Hopkisn reluctance?
I need to ask this, seriously, why should the main man at 168 have to travel to prove himself? he is an introvert and doesn't put himself out there like a Davi Haye or Floyd Mayweather for instance, he preferred the quiet life. For a fighter that "didn't force himself into the limelight" he certainly made a good living.
