really good point and it's hard to rag on calzaghe for doing what jones did. calzaghe didn't fight the best out there, neither did jones. there were reasons for each and yeah, if you can get a sweet deal with hbo/wbo and take on consistently b-level guys for a shitload of money, who's to say we wouldn't to?
Good post.:good Do you regard Roy Jones as a greater fighter than Calzaghe? Even though Calzaghe beat him.:yep
thats fair enough, duran and leonard were 2 of the greatest fighters who ever lived. spinks was a 2 weight champion like calzaghe and spinks disgraced himself against tyson, he was beat before the 1st bell rang.
i think spinks gets judged a little too harshly for that. he absolutely lost mentally before the fight but other than that, he was brilliant
I agree, though I think Roy took more risks than Calzaghe, won bigger fights, and will go down as the greater fighter in my opinion.:good But they were both good at calculating risks, I can't blame them, boxing doesn't have an old timers league, and you have to think about your future and do what you can, when you can...:yep
hard to find time to insult people over the internet while marinating some chops for the fam i try :hat
Yep, he is one of the fighters I would give a good chance against Roy at LHW.. His loss to Tyson does overshadow some of his early brilliance, but that was an amazing ATG prime HW, fighting a former LWH.... The man was great, other than that.
yeah, thats kind of interesting for me. i was just getting into boxing when holmes was 48and0 and was looking to equal marciano's record, only for this man called spinks to come and **** all that up with a split decision and then win a re-match. i didn't know much about spinks before that day and the sad thing is i've never properly researched his career since. truth is i was a bit bitter about him because i liked larry holmes. when tyson destroyed spinks, i was happy about it. i've got kind of an ignorant spot when it comes to spinks, infact i've never even checked his resume out on boxingrec, all i know was that he was a well thought of light heavyweight who was still undefeated when he met tyson.
I agree. I've also read and heard other comments from Calzaghe that are consistent with that attitude. Good post. I think nowadays a fighter's pride is more tied to his paycheck than his legacy. (I can't blame them, they're not doing it for free). But each loss is magnified and can potentially derail the money train. It sucks, but it's the reality of it.
good post and checking his record sells him both short and a little tall. watching him is the same: he's brutally awkward and efficient but ugly as ****. still, he ****ed up the best fighters in the second best era of LHW ever
I have stuck up for you a time or two, ever since I saw your top 10 atg list that was very good. ..:good
