i really feel that GSP won the first fight. i thought it was pretty easy to score too. the first was for Penn without question. even thought the next 2 were much closer than the 1st i see no way how you could give either round to Penn. i see the same this time with GSP in a decesion, unless Penn gases late and gets stopped.

I see no reason why he couldnt have won the 3rd on some peoples cards. GSP did take him down twice but BJ did get his own takedown, landed the better strikes and off his back he tried to do something he was going for a Gogaplata. He was trying to finish the fight unlike GSP who tried to run the clock down until the submission started to bother him. Close round either way but I scored it for Penn.

I'm going to have to go with GSP on this one. I don't put as much weight as some people do - into Penn's claims of being out of shape for their first fight. Styles make fights and in this instance - GSP has the right style and the right tools to win a UFC match with BJ Penn. His overall striking is more well rounded including kicks and knees, he has incredible takedowns and a ruthless ground and pound game. BJ still has the superior submission game - but he had the superior submissions the first time around and couldn't catch GSP in anything. BJ is still good - while GSP has improved his ground game. In a no rules no time limits match - I think BJ might eventually catch up to GSP - but I don't see it happening this time around.

Maybe, maybe not. Penn seems to have his conditioning problems behind him. Nice to see you picking Penn. What made you change your mind. :rofl

    1. BJ clearly gassed in the first fight. First Round, GSP could barely take BJ down. Rest of fight, BJ couldn't fight off the takedowns due to fatigue.
    2. BJ has the better striking.
    3. An exhausted BJ almost caught GSP in a gogoplata late in the fight.
    4. BJ completely neutralized GSP on the ground, also BJ is the only fighter who's guard kept GSP controlled and he couldn't pass.
    5. No Rules, No Time Limits == GSP has a better chance

Good points, except for the BJ has better striking. I just don't buy it. People like to give the edge to BJ in striking because he marked up GSP's face in the first round of their fight - but GSP was landing kicks the whole time which weren't leaving noticeable marks - but were still scoring. I'm not saying anything people here don't know - but to make the point - body kicks - like body punches in boxing - accelerate fatigue. Penn got kicked in the body and subsequently slowed down as the fight wore on. It wasn't a coincidince.

No time limits means no stand ups which means the only way GSP gets out of BJ guard is to work his way out. Under UFC rules he has an artificial advantage with always being able to rely on the end of the round or a referee standup. Under the old rules there were no artificial escapes like this.

You make a very very good point with the leg kicks. I just watched this fight again after reading your posts and watch what BJ starts to do in the 3rd round. He is lifting his left leg up automatically before engaging. A sign that GSPs kicks were taking there toll.
