If there is one Legendary Nights documentary was made based on one fight since 2000 what would you choose? I personally would choose Cotto-Margarito. While there have been better fights IMO none come close in terms of the overall story. You had one fighter some believed to be a win away from being P4P#1. A brilliant combination of skills, heart and intense pressure on Puerto Rican parade day. I thought Margarito coming to the forefront of the boxing world was a awesome story- it took him 15 years, half of his life, for people to realise just how good he was. He did it not though talent or skills but through mental capabilities- the motivation to take shots from anyone and keep coming forward, the chin to absorb shots from great punchers and the grit to keep coming forward even in the face of incoming punches. Yet this 'invincibility' lasted all of 6 months before the hand wrapping scandel came out and with it Shane Mosley knocked out Margarito. Most fans called for his leaving of the sport, while many even believed he should be jailed. What can beat this story?
Cotto/Margo will get the Arguello/Pryor treatment as in "Black bottle vs LOADED GLOVES" Give the bottle!! Not that one! the one i mixed earlier!! Panama Lewis in the corner before the start of the 14th round & no urine test taken after the fight.
Hopkins/Trinidad. 9/11. Flag throwing incident. Tito seen as invincible and KOing everyone. Hopkins the criminal who came to this point the hard way. And finally, the masterful performance. Tito retired after his first loss.
You know Gatti vs Ward I will make it in there somehow. And even with no **** talk lead up, the fight alone deserves Legendary Nights treatment.
Corrales/Castillo 1 was a Showtime fight =/ or else it'd be a prime candidate. Floyd/Hatton could be an interesting one. The Hatton band, Floyd's trash talk, the weigh-ins, Joe Cortez's ridiculous reffing during the fight, and finally ..the check hook. Probably not the best fight but I think it could be interesting. Could recap Hatton's downfall towards the end too.
