What did Galento do to **** Jack off so much, and how old was Jack at the time, out of curiosity? How'd the Schmeling/Bear sparring matches go?
Sonny and Foreman is the one that springs to mind... McCall and Tyson would have been great in 95.........
There have been a few sketchy variations on the story. One was that he was pestering Jack for help as a manager, another was that Dempsey became aggravated with Galento's lackadaisical training habits after he did become Tony's manager, and a third that the obnoxious Galento mouthed off to him. (Maybe all of the above. Can somebody else here at ESB help shed some light on this?) What is apparently clear is what followed next. Jack put on the gloves and stepped in the ring at Stllman's to spar with Galento. First he outboxed him, then laid him out with that lethal hook of his. Standing over Two-Ton, Dempsey snarled, "That's how you throw a left hook, Tony. Now, go get youself a manager." This was probably in the mid 1930s When Dempsey was touring Europe as HW Champion, he sparred a two round exhibition with Schmeling in Cologne. Jack evidently hauled off on Max, perhaps trying to give the crowd a show. Having none of it, Max fought back, earning Jack's respect by showing he could handle himself in the ring. Dempsey was like a big brother to Baer, and they became the closest of life-long friends. Sometimes, stories of exchanges between the two make it seem like they were a comedy team. Jack was Baer's chief second for his bout with Louis, so of course he sparred with Baer in training. (Dempsey escorted Baer back to their corner following round three, which ended with Maxie on the deck waving to the crowd after Joe's triple hook dropped him. Baer didn't want to go back out to face Louis. Jack snapped, "Do you want him to knock you out, or do you want ME to do it?" I think it's very telling, that during the peak performance of Joe's career, Baer was more afraid of Dempsey.) They also staged an exhibition in Baer's camp when Maxie was preparing to face Schmeling, in a Dempsey promotion. (It was reportedly Jack's idea to have Baer wear the Star of David on his trunks for that one. He might have liked Schmeling to wear a swastika, for all we know, but naturally the strong willed Schmeling would never consider such a thing, certainly not when he refused to ditch his own Jewish manager in defiance of Hitler.)
Rose vs Famechon Ellis vs Fenech... Fenech quit. Koysta vs Steve Johnson..... watched these guys spar 20 rounds over a few days. Soliman vs me.
Light Welterweight Thomas Hearns???? Shurely shome mishtake? At the end of his career didn't Ali use Tim Witherspoon as a sparring partner?
I have on tape, Dempsey and Schmeling sparing. This is actually something worth a look. Old Jack handled things pretty well, considering the age and stylistic changes.
