Mac Foster sparked Liston in sparing. That's fairly well known and obviously very true. Eugene Hart bloodied Ali's nose in sparring, which is was convinced Hart that he could have success as a fighter. Then there's Hart supposedly knocking Tim Witherspoon out in sparring.
I had a photograph, purchased from Jerome Shochet in the early '90s. Gene Tunney and Jim Corbett were mixing it. Hardly a legitimate sparring session, as Corbett was dressed in long pants and a woolen sweater. Both men were gloved, Tunney in trunks... circa. 1928-1930.
Supposedly Foreman liked to really hit his partners, but once, he hit Sonny Liston who only looked him in the eye unfazed and said "no son" hitting him back with something mean. I heard that Pipina Cuevas beat up a very young Tony Ayala bad. When asked besteen rounds if he wanted to quit, Ayala said something like: "He may be a champion to someone but he ain't **** to me." As for Dempsey-Schmeling, I heard it the opposite way: Dempsey wanted to carry the kid and a young Schemling wanted to show his stuff and hit Dempsey good, really making him mad. Who knows if any of these are true.
As soon as I have the opotunity, and technical knowledge of a clever person to help, I will have it posted on you tube. Max, at that stage was the former champion.... not a kid. The film is late 30s, and Louis is alraedy champ. Hence the sparring is in the States, with Schmeling in prep. for Louis II
But they sparred before this, when Demspey was touring Europe as champion and Scmeling was 15-16. I read this in World Boxing magazine.
No disrespect to Johnny Lewis, yet.... In Melb, at Rennies gym, Lester and Fenech sparred... Fenech was pasted around the ribs.. severely. Quit the rounds, and packed up. A certain Mr Rennie has repeated the story. Give him a call.
I read about this and Young was outfoxing Holyfield, but Holyfield said he learnt that instead of a throwing a three or four punch combo he could catch Young by throwing a six or seven punch combo, I have no idea where the article is on the net but I will have a look and post a link if I find it. Here is the link its an article on Eastside anyway http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=11218&more=1
Duran sparred with Benn in prep for the Stone Hands' fight with Barklay. Benn is a legend in our house anyway!
Johnny's story will do me fine. It comes across well balanced and honest and acknowledges Ellis got the better of the lighter less experiences Fenech once in sparring. Pretty funny Lester packed up shop and went back home i must say
