Casamayor is the lineal champ - surely beating a guy who is over the weight limit is more of an achievement!

I think that it would be good for the likes of Ring Magazine (who generally award to lineal champions) to strip guys who are fighting illegitimate contenders, and avoiding/ducking the No. 1 contender.

In truth, most fighters (and HBO) don't really give a **** about alphabet titles anymore, and would prefer to see the best guys fighting each other. If say, Ring magazine, threatened to strip Ricky Hatton for not fighting Junior Witter (Champ vs No. 1 contender), I would imagine the fight would be made, whilst if say the IBF did that, he would just tell 'em to do what they ****ing want!

I would think this innovation by Ring Magazine would reduce the influence of alphabet organisations in boxing, which would benefit everybody - other than themselves obviously.

That way, we won't see stupid 'international' belts or whatever - you would win your national championship followed by say European title before challenging for world honours, and there would be fewer mismatches at title level, such as Calzaghe vs Manfredo.

Your thoughts on this one please.

That is because Castillo, the winner of the fight, came in overweight!
Casamayor was under the LW limit so the title was available for him and he won the fight. It's a clear cut case. Casa is the linear champ.

I fully admitted that it was semantics. Any, try to explain how Castillo had a legitimate claim to the lineal title.

Nate Campbell is the number one contender. Casamayor had defeated the past lineal champion in Diego Corrales who beat Castillo and so on. Championships are won in the ring and Juan Diaz never defeated the consensus champion at the weight just other contenders with belts and thats what Cmpbell has just done, beat the number one contender. A fight between the two would settle the score, and Casamayor already has a win over Campbell. I believe if it ever goes down and Casamayor wins, he should retire and let Campbell and the young guns figure it out.

What linear champ did Castillo beat?

Semantics? The winner of the fight coming in over weight is a completely different story to loser of the fight coming in overweight!

As for Castillo, when a lineal title is vacated, like Mayweather did, the it is only continued once the consensus #1 and #2 face each other. Just like when Joe Louis retired as champ and Walcot and Charles fought each other for the title. Well when Mayweather moved up, Lazcano, Casa and Castillo were the top 3 LW's..Castillo beat both of them and as such was considered the LW champ.

When Mayweather moved up and the title was vacated, Castillo proceeded to clean out the divison. Beat number one contender Lazcano for Mayweather's vacated WBC belt, defeated Joel Casamyor(current champion),and former IBF titlist Julio Diaz....Basically he proved he was the best in the wegh class by defeating the best they had to offer.

You said Casa will be the lineal champ until he loses. I said that isn't true, which it isnt. Corrales lost and people still considered him the lineal champ. My argument is an issue of semantics, which I admitted.

There is no consensus #1 and #2. Also, Castillo won the alleged lineal title after he beat Lazcano. He never beat Corrales in a LW fight. Furthermore, Charles beat Wolcot for a title given out by an actual Boxing association.

No they didnt! Once Corralles came in overweight he was losing the title. The title was on the line for Joel since he came in under the LW limit. Therefore when Casa won he was the new champ. How could Corrales be considered the champ when he had lost to a lightweight!

Castillo beat the other 2 top guys at LW..therefore he's the champ, it's fairly simple! Also, Charles was considered the champ when he beat WALCOTT. Charles was considered the lineal champ..just as Marciano was when he beat Walcott who had beaten Charles in a re-match.
Same happened at lightweight. Castillo beat the two top LW's...therefore he's the champ. SIMPLE!

I don't understand-if it's nothing more than semantics, why the outrage?

:rasta its not rocket science...some of these guys dont even understand boxing or how you become champion but have an opinion about everything. As you said when a title is vacated, which ever contender cleans up, he becomes the man, simple as that

No matter how you spin it, you can't get around the facts. Casamayor is the lineal champ. End of story.
