Shane Moseley- hes always respectful after fights, gives credit where it goes, just wish he would have acknowledged De La Hoyas win in the 2nd fight.
Good guys: Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini, Kelly Pavlik, both mid-western guys with good, hardworking values. Jermaine Taylor seems like a nice kid.
why do people say this? mosley blamed the first forrest loss on a headbutt and said forrest learned that in georgia gyms from evander holyfield. then he claimed he won the rematch. mosley then kept talking about "a ****** on my back" against wright, and claimed he won the rematch and had winky "holding on for dear life". finally he is classy after his 5th defeat, and the memory-impaired boxing fans go "wow, he is always so gracious in defeat". not to mention he is a steroid user, using the old "i didn't know what I was taking" excuse.
Yeah, that story with Hopkins refusing to sign that glove for a cancer cause, and then Taylor did it... Good stuff.
It is hard to say because the way people act on screen isnt always the way they are in person. I have heard alot of people on here who said they met James Toney or Tarver in person and that they were real cool and down to earth. They both come off as dickheads on TV, but maybe it is for show. The only pro boxer Ive met in person was Winky Wright. This was back in the day, around 1998ish, I didnt know who he was at the time, but he was real nice in person. Used to see him all the time in the morning at the park before school, he would job there and was always nice to all the kids at the park. There wasnt the least bit of arrogance in him. In fact I had no idea at the time he was on the world class level, I just assumed he was some small time boxer because he was very down to earth in the way he acted.
as egotistical as roy jones may be, i have much respect for him as a person for doing things like the nypd benefit against brannon and donating lots of money to mcclellan's family. overall he seems like a pretty decent guy. Interestingly, one of the classiest people I've seen after a close loss was Riddick Bowe. for all the **** he did, he was extremely gracious after losing the rematch to holyfield.
agreed. joe louis was usually classy and generous to a fault, but he had a bad dark side to him. muhammad ali could be so loud, cruel, and arrogant, but most describe him behind closed doors as quiet and shy. who would think of ali of all people to be a quiet, shy person?
I've got a bio of his and I don't remember off the top of my head reading about that one, but I don't doubt it. He had a bit of a nasty streak, for sure.
You're absolutely correct about his gambling, doping, infedility and suspected abuse of his wife. (There is one concrete report of him slapping her after an argument.) One the whole though, I think Joe was an awfully nice man. A sweetheart, really. He avoided a punch-up in the army on more than one occassion and one time contained himself when some guy at a party took a cheap shot at him. And then there's all his charity work, donating purses to the Army and Navy relief, etc. As Joe himself says: "I never meant no harm to no-one." When Marciano died, Joe was shaken to his core and arranged for flowers to be sent to his family at once. He also attended the funeral and kissed Rocky's casket in a genuine show of affection.
