Because of the speed. Sugar Shame is explosive! But Lara a slow thudding and damaging puncher.

I am merely using examples to illustrate the point though obviously yes I am citing one of the GOATs. British fighters are to be respected as are African Americans, Latinos, East European, African etc but let’s get it right when you examine the history of boxing the best fighters in history come from the mid-west USA. Chances are when you look at a truly great fighter when they lost invariably it was to someone from the mid-west USA. In fact my friend or as the say in Mexico Cabrones when we were all debating what would in Shields vs Marshall I kept emphasising that Claressa is from and schooled in the mid-west USA so Savannah was in over her head. So yes give credit to our country Britain with its diverse mix but we cannot say we are at the top. No sir. Another question, had the fight continued and Wood being fatally hurt how would you be feeling now? I know you are a caring empathetic man so you would be gutted. At least Wood gets to fight another day maybe against Warrington or Lara or both. I also you you respect Lara for coming to the shores twice to knockout world champions something only special breed fighters can do.

I do examine the history of boxing and I acknowledge and pay due reverence to the fact that the tiny majestic isle of Great Britain is the spiritual and ancestral home of modern boxing and it's just an indisputable fact that Great Britain produces the greatest, most toughest and fearless warriors within the sport of boxing. There's a reason why British domestic dust ups are the envy of the world and why virtually every other one is a FOTY contender. That doesn't mean that other countries and geographical regions don't also produce great boxing talent and fierce warriors.

We Brits are a warrior people and even though British Slickness is the benchmark all other forms of slickness are measured by, and our boys are slicker than oil on grease when they choose to switch to slick mode, our warrior spirit and desire to entertain and give the fans their money's worth compels us to go to war.

Do you know what a nobbins is, Olu?

'Nobbins is British slang for money thrown into a boxing ring by the crowd in appreciation of a good contest'

ie. the crowd in attendance would literally shower the ring with their hard earned money by way of appreciation for the combatants fighting like warriors and entertaining them

Whilst I have a great deal of respect for the American legends of the sport, and in particular the greats from the black and white era or pre 90s ones, I'm not a fan of the American school of slickness especially the modern one which I consider a fear based and unmanly slickness. For a slick boxer to impress me they have to possess otherworldly mesmerizing skills, especially if they're back foot slicksters who are obviously not to be held in the same esteem as front foot aggressive ones are. One fearless warrior is worth 1000 fear based slicksters. That's just me. The warrior or the Brit in me speaking.

Regarding Wood suffering a fatal or life altering injury? Of course I would be distraught about it, as I have everytime I've witnessed a ring tragedy. However, as said, he's a Gatti gene fighter, has a track record of coming back from the brink of defeat to go on to win fights, he was in a handy lead, defending his world title at home, and there was only seconds to go before the bell. Davison acted hastily when a cooler head was needed. He should've been motioning to the ref to instruct Lara back to a neutral corner which would've bought valuable seconds for Wood to recover. But he didn't.

Jesting aside, I'm not going to crucify him for pulling Wood out but I do believe he could've handled the situation better. He should've had his Angelo Dundee hat on

Stop making the mistake of judging Gatti gene fighters by the standards we judge mortal man

Did you not watch Wood vs Conlan and Gill vs Guerfi? Those fights were literally a couple of weeks apart

The great Ali rose from the dead twice

Warrrington suffered a perforated eardrum in round 4 in the first Lara fight and after getting dropped and clambering back up he managed to make it all the way to the 9th round even though he ate a sickening amount of savage flush bombs and was on wobbly bobbly legs from the 4th round onward

I don't even like Warrington but any fighter who can display that amount of heart and toughness gets my respect

Point being. Warrington literally ate god knows how many flush bombs from Lara whilst in a badly compromised state

There is a lot of merit in your comments and our exchanges and in fact many posters on here particularly the young ones would do well to read and learn from masters discussing the finer points. Whilst the old Marquis of Queensbury a proper Toff like me and Brit is to be be commended bringing rules to prize fighting, like Association Football (that is soccer to the North American) what was started in Britain was taking all over the world and fair to say the USA is the Brazil of Boxing as it is boxing. In particular those skills of the 1950s/60s what we call o”d school skills and fundamentals.
As you know I come from the school of boxing that insists on good defence because you don’t give free shots in this game. Be you a come forward guy or back foot slickster you can still display all the attributes such as skills, defence, timing, ring IQ etc.

Finally to prove my point which you will agree with when we consider the top 5 P4P greatest of all time difficult on a sincere and honest appraisal to put a Brit in there. My personal 5 not in any order than they ultimate galactic is are:

    Ali
    SRR
    Duran
    Floyd
Sugar Ray Leonard(God you don’t know how much it hurts to put him in the list after they cheated my guy Marvelous Marvin Hagler).

Of course in Britain we had Lennox, Super Joe Calzaghe, Naz, Lloyd Honeyghan, Ted Kid Lewis, Bob Fitzsimmons, Benn, Eubank, Froch, Fury, AJ, John Conteh, my mate St.George Groves but none i. The global top 5 P4P.

Also found out today that Lara was a voluntary not mandatory defence. Why Matchroom did this is unbelievable. They know how to get their guys beat. Who does their matchmaking?

    Let's do a little experiment.

Let's see... Arturo Gatti, was not shockingly, an Aries. Of course, let us not forget, Joe Calzaghe with his ATG chin and hardcore carrier of the Gatti Gene, also an Aries.

Leigh Wood is an Leo... with an Aries Moon.
Jordan Gill is a Cancer... with an Aries Moon.
Sam Maxwell is a Libra... with an Aries Mars.
Liam Smith is a Leo.... with an Aries Moon and Aries Mars.
Josh Taylor is a Capricorn.... with an Aries Moon.
Tyson Fury is a Leo.... with an Aries Mars.
Juan Ryder is a Cancer.... with an Aries Mars.

Yep, it's certified, the Gatti Gene is present in all of them.:D

Unfortunately for Jordan Gill.... Kiko Martinez is a Piscarian. Pisces with an Aries Mercury and Aries Venus, he never stood a chance.:sisi1

For the record, Ben Davison, a Leo with a Scorpio Moon, not a drop of Aries in sight.

Does not possess the Gatti Gene.:nonono

    Thank you

Whilst the USA has traditionally been a super power in world boxing and we do and must pay due reverence to its legends of the sport, boxing is much much more of a global sport these days whereas it was very different for most of the 20th century and this is only a good thing. You only have to take a glance at the current P4P top 10 for confirmation of that

Also, we have to acknowledge that the deck, for reasons I have outlined before, is still heavily stacked in American fighter's favour which obviously helps the US to maintain it's grip on the sport.

This is why I respect your Ali's and SRR's

Because they were road warriors too

Yes, Lara was a voluntary defence for Wood. He chose one of the baddest and dangerous hombres in the sport and indeed one of the sport's biggest punchers for a voluntary defence. This is what I mean when I saw we are a warrior people because very few would've done that. There were less risky and much more lucrative domestic match ups out there for Wood but he made straight for the bull when he climbed over the fence instead of the cows.

    Was it ill-advised? No doubt.

Would I have steered him in that direction had I been a member of his team? Absolutely not, especially given his age and the lucrative match ups that were available for him first.

And it's not like he would've been ducking legit threats and milking his title because these domestic match ups were also against world class opponents and weren't easy fights for him and Lara was only his 2nd defence of the title and no one should really begrudge him had fought Conlan and Warrington in his 2nd and 3rd ones instead before taking on someone like Lara.

    Wowzers! Uncanny.

Not only doesn't Davison not possess the Gatti gene

He possesses the David Brent one

Someone posted these in the Brit forum

    Check this out

Naughty language warning on this one!

Honestly we really don't. Maybe Warrington and Wood do but tons of Brits were actually rooting for Lara against Warrington and fighters like Kiko have come over here many times and beaten many of our boys and we have nothing but respect for him. Providing you're not a vile POS, are a warrior and win fair and square we British boxing fans are generally very fair and good sports.

Definitely the Matchroom matchmaker deserves to be fired or have a serious word with.

Ben Davison and Leigh Wood suggested Lara. Hearn wanted Wood to fight Kiko Martinez originally.
