Look, Lemieux fought well, until he got caught. Offensive skills he has, are really good, but Rubio seemed to take his best shots without much problems. One loss against a pretty good fighter in Rubio is not a make fight to the career. David sure sounds now like an ass for saying Sergio would be no problem and neither would bute, but if you don't have self confidence, you don't have ****. Russ Abner did the right thing tonight. Seriously, the loss, will have little to do with his career as a whole. If you watched when David got knocked down, his one leg was bent really funny. He must have had his equilibrium knocked way off balance. David will be fine.
He will need to make serious adjustments though. I mean how about a solid jab? Everyone goes on about his offensive ability, but I've yet to see him establish and impose himself on an opponent with his jab.
Lemieux hasn't actually showed a "skill set" he's so used to getting in there and putting them away instead of boxing. Nough said
his jab is fine. I think his offense is pretty 1 dimensional. I definitely think his power is overrated. Rubio took every shot. He throws the same combination. He needs some more defensive movement, sort of like tyson type style. He will be fine. Russ Abner did the right thing. I mean, I am sure, he didn't get huge money for this fight, why completely risk the guy for little money?
His power is definitely not overrated, Rubio's experience showed by how he was able to cover up and stay calm. He literally rope-a-doped lemieux
Not to take anything away from Rubio. He was obviously the opponent in this fight, even though I thought he'd win.. But he is a natural 154 pounder with losses to guys like Ouma, and first-round blow out loss to Kofi Jantua. What that tells me is that Lemeiux is finished as a top-level prospect. Take a look again at the fight. Rubio was never in trouble, always in control of himself and just waiting for his opportunity. When he saw, he won pretty easily. Obviously this loss doesn't end the career of a 21-year old, but it does prove he's not a top-level talent. If the fought again, it would end sooner. Rubio would know he doesn't have to wait so long next time because he's so far above David as a boxer. Seriously. Repeated views of this fight will show that it was actually a pretty easy fight for Rubio.
Looking back I wonder if this is what Rubio thought he would do in the Pavlik fight. He kept talking about this 'secret plan' he had.
I never saw Rubio fight before tonight, but it could be. I honestly thought he was just trying to survive until he come out in round 6 guns blazing
Well, with hindsight it is easy to say it was a good strategy against Lemieux who had never been deep into a fight. With Pavlik he would have been crazy to think that would work at that time because Kelly had never shown any indication stamina would be a problem.
THe thing is that Lemieux didn't hit Rubio with anything flush while rubio was swinging at the same time. Rubio blocked around 90% of what Lemieux threw because he saw it coming. U have to set people up. Anyone can be offensive and defensive at times. The better fighters can do both at the same time. Rubio is a limited guy and the only reason he beat him was because of flat out poor strategy starting with no body punching on a guy who wants to play punching bag. Rubio hit Lemieux while he was swinging and lulled him to sleep with the jab before starting to throw the straight over it. Lemieux has some good tools but needs a good trainer to get his footwork and head movement good enough to put him in a position to hit opponents with shots while they are swinging themselves because that's what wins fight.
He needs to create angles that his opponents won't see + his power = lights out, he reminded me of tyson at times when he gets close enough and places his feet to get good leverage on those bombs, but he fired away at rubios guard instead of set ing up and countering at angles.and if rubio would have thrown the upper cut straight down the middle more he would of tagged him often.
It might be interesting to watch Rubio/Lemieux back to back with Rubio/Pavlik. He was inactive in the first rounds of each. I know one difference for sure was I remember Kelly splitting his guard with a at least one big punch. I'm pretty sure he worked the body also but it has been a while. I just remember in the first him actually working Rubio over on the ropes and then standing back. Not something that is characteristic of Kelly when he has someone on the ropes. Like I say, it has been a while and if I can get a copy of this fight maybe I'll watch them back to back and compare the early rounds.
