    because the WBO tended to discourage unifications between themselves and other bodies at that time, in order to build their own status rather than remain being seen as stepping stone titles.

    in other words, it wasn't lewis avoiding a guy who was defending against ahem **** like Derrick Jefferson, Charles Shufford, Frans Botha, Ray Mercer & Jameel McCline.
    After 2002, why the hell would Lewis avoid a guy who defends against a 37 year old retiree, and then subsequently loses instantly to him, and then hasn't the guts to rematch the retiree? WLad needed to get in line behind others who were genuine challengers.
