Let's say this happens in spring of 2003, around when either RJJ fought John Ruiz or LL fought Vitali Klitschko. For the sake of simplicity, let's call it those same respective versions of either man from those nights (although in the latter case, Lewis had been training for an easier opponent in Kirk Johnson until Vitali - scheduled to compete on the undercard - was brought in as the injured Johnson's replacement on not quite two weeks' notice).

Lewis is absolutely no John Ruiz; on the other hand, even as dangerous as he still proved to be against VK he was markedly on the slide from his mid-late 90's peak and if Jones was ever going to have a chance...

Or is this a case of simply too much a size discrepancy to be overcome in light of the skill & power the larger man possessed, and with master strategist Emanuel Steward in his corner to boot? Would it be inevitable that Roy's chin would crumble under shots from somebody north of 200lb with more than Ruiz's middling pop (and Lennox's was anything but; not to mention more precise than The Quiet Man and rangier to the tune of half a foot) over 12 rounds?

There actually was talk of making this happen in late 2003 or early 2004 in our real-life timeline, but nothing serious came of it before Lennox retired for good and Roy decided to leave well enough alone by vacating the WBA title in between his first & second matches with Tarver down in the familiar and safe (or so he thought) climes of light heavyweight.

I have a hard time believing that Jones, who was at the tale end of his prime and whose chin was the first thing to go, would end the fight on his feet. I have Lewis winning by brutal knockout at some point during the fight.

I think Lewis was still more than capable enough, and certainly wily enough, to shatter Roy's chin like thin ice. I mean, it'd only take one shot. A pretty horrible mismatch (that I would've liked to have seen).

LL would have brutally K.O'd him. I do not believe RJJ was ever serious campaigning at heavyweight. It was just a quick grab to be entered into the history books. I don't blame him at all for this. He technically was a HW champion. I do not think he had any real intention of fighting LL or tyson at this time.

I believe Holyfield was also in the conversation. But yeah, any of them would have been a far more serious threat for Roy than Don King's stooge. Huggy Bear happening to hold the WBA offered a once-in-a-lifetime juicy risk-reward opportunity.

Lewis would have took that "S" off his chest. No way Roy could have beat Lewis back in 2003.

RJJ doesn’t seem to like being caught on the chin, seems as though it was his only real weakness.

Lewis’s right hand would have the same effect a lullaby would have on a baby, RJJ going night night

It's actually funny Lewis has a dig at Roy Jones Jr for beating John Ruiz, when infact Lewis gave up the belt rather than fighting John Ruiz. Now I'm not saying Lewis ducked Ruiz but that did infact happen. Also reports that John Ruiz used to give Lennox Lewis hell in sparring so make of that what you will.

Also John Ruiz was able to drop Holyfield something Lewis couldn't do in 24 rounds of fighting, and remember Holyfield fought Ruiz straight after fighting Lennox.

I don't think that Lewis didn't fight Ruiz because he thought he would lose. I appreciate you haven't said that you do, I'm saying that Lewis not fighting Ruiz should be considered irrelevant as to how a fight between the 2 would have unfolded.

Holyfield is one common opponent, Ruiz going 1-1-1 vs a Holyfield that had degraded by my eye, relative to the version Lennox went 2-0 against on fair scorecards. Another common opponent is David Tua.

Which Lewis opponent do you consider most similiar to Ruiz in terms of size, style and most important quality? I'd say Botha. Ruiz was more durable, whilst Botha had faster hands and was a more skilled outboxer. Have I missed someone obvious?

Jones had planned on sticking around at HW to fight Tyson, but money issues meant the fight broke down.

Lewis would have been 6 inches taller, 50lbs heavier, and also Lennox Lewis.

I truly believe RJJ is near the top of the ATG list, but even I think this would have been outside his reach.
