Apparently the Tyson fight was incredibly close to being done. It was the reason it took Jones a while to decide to go back down to fight Tarver. He said he kept the weight on because he was told the Tyson fight was essentially made.

Lewis is having a cheeky dig at RJJ when the fact is Lewis gave up his belt rather than fighting John Ruiz. And RJJ won a belt from Ruiz that Lewis originally vacated can you not see the irony in that ? so it makes Lewis's roast kind of baffling.

I think your taking my post too literally i'm posting in tongue and cheek, i'm not saying that John Ruiz would beat Lewis. I'm just saying i find it laughable that Lewis is trying to roast RJJ, when infact Ruiz hurt Holyfield and dropped him which is better than what Lewis did in 24 rounds vs him. And lets not forget Ruiz fought Holyfield, straight after Holyfield had a fairly good argument to beating Lewis in their 2nd fight, so i think Lewis is opening himself up to being roasted.

Tbh I haven't read/watched what Lewis said about RJJ. So I won't and can't criticise you for pulling him up on it.

    I'm just saying that:

    1. I don't think Lewis vacated a belt for fear of losing to Ruiz. If he would have fought Ruiz in 200 for the WBA, he'd have likely had to vacate one of the other titles for not defending against their mandatory. Instead of Ruiz, he fought the unbeaten Grant, who was considered a bigger threat than Ruiz at the time, and for what I'm confident was substantially more money.
    2. Lewis was on a completely different level to Ruiz, who would have been tailormade for him.
    3. On the whole Lewis did better against superior versions of Holyfield than Ruiz did.
    4. Tua was another common opponent of the two.

No one is claiming Lewis was scared of Ruiz. But if Lewis wants to roast RJJ for beating Ruiz for a version of a world title, then I think we can have a cheeky dig at Lewis for vacating the belt against Ruiz, the same belt RJJ won and the same opponent Lewis refused to fight, so as I said I think there is some irony in that.

As for Holyfield he looked his age vs Lewis the 1st time, and Holyfield fought Ruiz straight after fighting Lewis. I think it was the same version of Holyfield against Ruiz that it was vs Lewis, it's just people don't like giving Ruiz credit because he had an ugly style.

I hate Ruiz's style of fighting but he did have some decent wins, and was effective in his own ugly way.

Fair enough. My post wasn't intended to criticise or contradict anything you said, just taking the subject matter and adding to it with fresh perspectives.

Yeah my post isn't really that serious it's not one of our serious debates in classic forum don't worry. It was just me seeing irony in Lewis's comment when in fact hes opening himself up to being roasted.

...eh, I kind of see the point you're making but the difference is that Lennox unlike Roy had absolutely nothing to prove (at heavyweight - already having six championship reigns under his belt...eight, if you happen to count the IBO, which I personally don't) by the point he vacated the belt. Nobody thought Ruiz was a better heavyweight champion or would be anything other than a massive underdog versus Lewis. There was zero intrigue surrounding that fight, as there was surrounding Roy moving up to face any HW titlist in theory.

Lewis' point, which is valid, is that if he was going to make that bold move, he did so in the cheapest, easiest, lowest-hanging-fruit way possible and the admiration for his accomplishment should be tempered by the fact that he could have aimed higher and given himself a chance to make real history as opposed to just a looks-good-on-paper legacy boost.

Closest anybody might come is Toney, you reckon? Just going by similar report cards against common opponents Holyfield and Rahman - and the fact that of all former middle champs to have a whack at heavy none have the chin (and few natural heavies possess the defensive slickness or counter-punching skill) of Lights Out.

Still waiting on that explanation, chief. What about my OP indicated that I was smoking any stuff? If you think it's a ridiculous mismatch in favor of Lennox and Roy would get perhaps literally murdered in the ring, then just say that (I do not disagree). The fact is that it was a fight that was briefly, twenty years ago, in a position to possibly happen. So asking "what if that possibility had come to fruition" isn't some outlandish fantastical thing. Lewis himself sort of second-handedly opened up the dialogue with his quote tweet. I was just opening up the discussion. Sure it'll be 90% people thinking even an old fat Lion would deal handily with the RJJ that beat Ruiz, but there are inevitably going to be the loyal RJJ fans (but apparently excluding the RJJFan ) that will cook up some apologia for giving him a crack.

Don't come spinning the block on the debate host like I set it up in any way other than completely neutral (as ought to be done). :nono:

Fair enough but Jones started his career as a Middleweight, and was in the era of the Super Heavyweight division. You can't really expect a 5'11 former Middleweight to be fighting 6'5 240+ pound Heavyweights.

Whilst I agree Ruiz wasn't setting the world alight with his performances, it's still a very good achievement for RJJ to move up from Light Heavyweight, skipping Cruiserweight division entirely and winning a title at Heavyweight.

If Lewis wants to have a dig at RJJ for beating Ruiz, then we can also have a dig at Lewis for vacating the belt against Ruiz, and RJJ winning that title from the same fighter Lewis vacated against.

As for a possible match up between RJJ and Lewis, well it's pretty obvious Lewis destroys a 5'11 blown up Light Heavyweight.

Lennox ko (not tko), round 4.

Roy would have no chance at all and the fight would only last long enough for Lennox to perfect his range, that would probably happen in the first 4 rounds

Lennox is calling him a paper HW champ. Which I agree with. Brutally honest assessment by Lennox.

On the other hand, even if he got viciously KTFO (which he would ironically a short time later in the rematch with Tarver down at 175lbs) Roy would be remembered for all time as having balls of steel for challenging Lennox instead of John.

I wonder if he could look into a crystal ball and see the stoppage losses in his future anyway, would he figure "may as well go big" and dare to stride into the fast lane for maximum glory?

Ruiz was the safest, chintziest option to jump up and cherry pick a title not just in that era but likely in the last 20-30 years.
