Who would I rank above him? If for the sake of conversation, Ali and Louis were you 1 & 2, you would rank Lewis over Dempsey, Tunney, Marciano, Holmes, and Foreman:nut GTFO. Lewis got KTFO, in his prime against two average HW's. The loss against Rahman was one of the biggest upsets not only in the HW division but in boxing. You talk about wicked strength? I guess that strength didn't apply towards his chin:yep Not only did Lewis have soft whiskers, but the guy had issues stayin in shape for fights. And what were his biggest wins? A washed up Tyson? Holyfield? :nut. By your token of measure-you'd put probably put Haye in top 20 if he were to beat Valuev:rofl
Until he lost. Lewis won that fight, as I recall. And I don't think Vitali was doing more than holding his own, at best. Sort of like Henry Cooper was being Ali's ass hands down, or Walcott was beating Marciano's ass hands down -- only they didn't beat them.
In terms of accomplishement, you have to give it to Ali, who beat the most great and near great heavies at or near their prime. Head to head, no one has a better package of skills than Lennox. No fighter is unbeatable, but Lennox's size, power, huge right hand, useful and underrated hook, uppercut, purposeful jab, and abilities to adapt to his opponent and learn from his mistakes make him a man who was capable of beating any heavy who ever lived on a given night.
What he did as a Heavyweight in his era I would put him in the top 10 for sure and may'be top 5. As for where he ranks of all the boxers of all time, I don't compare other boxers of other divisions.
i think the greatest of all time is big george and the second is lennox, the main thing is that lennox was a super heavy who was at the same time very athletic and fast. and he really faced great competition and won against all!!! against vitali he had the first time a fight against a real super heavy who was athletic and fast, but he beat him fair and square. a lot of people on esb underrate the fact that real tall boxers, 6.4 and taller, who are athletic and fast are very hard to beat, if not impossible, the only boxers who would have a chance against lewis were big george, larry holmes, and the klits( i don't think that they are top 10, but they are both very athletic and fast and tall)
Dude, McCall looked like crying before their first fight. Maybe it was Lewis that struck fear into these guys, how come it was Lewis that had to deal with freaks who could not keep it together (McCall, Golota and Akinwande) - Lewis instilled fear. When people were crying glass jaw, you still did not see long lines of people wanting a piece of him.
I do think he was charismatic, just not in the way the general boxing public "want to see as charismatic". Just like some boxing pundits mistake brutality and a fierce look equating a confident fighter.
I think the chin should keep him from #1 too. I think Lewis would find a way to win best of three match ups, but I think he may get starched by some of the all-time greats too at least once in a best of three. I do not think his chin was weak, but it was not made of iron either. Then again, he lost when he was complacent and did not respect his opponents, I have a hard time believing that Lewis would not respect the greats.
Holyfield is overrated at heavyweight, he is part of the reason the title got fractured in the first place during the nineties.
Im a real Lewis fan but GOAT might be a bit of a stretch. I'd definitely put him in the top five, possibly top three. Americans do tend to get a bit over protective of their precious Holyfield but lets face it, as great as Holy was, Lennox beat his arse...twice. No excuses. All this "over the hill" stuff is rubbish. And as for Klitschko.... If he couldn't beat a 38 year old, out of shape, ready for retirement Lewis, it's never gonna happen in a million years.
This video confirms his greatness and defeats every argument to the contrary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV-OplDwnZY
