I'm just not convinced. seems to me all the big names he fought were kind of old and passed their prime. I'm serious tho, I want educating on it, I'm not just putting him down at all.
Golota gives Bowe two beatings back to back. Doesnt survive a round with Lewis. Michael Grant the Big american hype, destroyed in 2. Shannon Briggs, just got done with beating Old foreman. Knocked down about 5-6times and battered stopped in 5. This is a guy who went the distance with vitali klitchko 12 years on. Razor Ruddock, Big strong brawler, just come off too good knockout wins Greg Page and phil jackson, And went the distance with mike tyson. Destroyed in 2. Vitali Klitchko, one of the hardest men in heavyweight boxing history. 6'7 250Lbs prime Vitali vs Fat lennox lewis. Close fight, but Lewis is such a natural fighter he turned it into a brawl, He couldnt outbox vitali in his condition. And he outbrawled vitali, Not many can do that and he was past prime. David Tua a mean left hook demon, short squat and iron jawed. He was a good fight for many. Dominated from start to finish 1-12. And barely landed more than 10 meaningful punches. Lewis showed a good chin, when he did get clipped by a few left hooks.
Ruddock had serious hype after going toe to toe with a peak Tyson twice Got destroyed If Lennox didn't fight tua everyone would have said he ducked him, he dominated him and everyone said the guy was a bum No body worth a damn every dared call Lewis out Maybe he should have given klitschko a rematch but by then he knew he was getting shot fast And anyway, if they had let the fight continue Lewis focuses on the eye and I guarantee klitschkos career would have ended that night Tyson had only lost to two men going into the Lewis fight, he was so badly dominated it didn't even look fair, it looked like a light heavy vs a super heavy Briggs can bang and he landed and Lewis showed a much bette chin than anyone will ever give credit for In boxing history maybe only Ali had a shot against Lennox
Just thought I'd weigh in with the Vit fight - I recently gave it a rewatch but it was a review of the fight and had some commentary afterwards, one thing I found interesting was they had footage of the ring-side doctor who explained why he stopped the fight - He said that in most instances a fight is stopped because a cut is bleeding into the eye affecting the fighters ability to see a punch etc but that in this he said the corner did a very good job of stemming the blood but what the issue here was that Vit's eye-lid had detached or something, he was unable to lift his eyelid up and with it covering half of his eye he had to tilt his head back so he could see, and that why he stopped it - never knew that reason before
Lewis was one of the best. Great offense and defense (the D improved with Manny) and the ***** to rematch his two f-ups. Hos chin was great, anybody can get sparked if they don't see it coming.
The key fights in Lewis' career were... Gary Mason was 35-0 and Lewis was 14-0 and Lewis sent him into a short retirement. Very dangerous fight to take at such an early stage in his career. Ruddock was seen as a top contender and very dangerous due to giving Tyson 2 tough fights and Lewis destroyed him faster than anyone would ever do. Mercer was an olympic gold medalist and while inconsistent had just given Holyfield a very tough fight, he had and iron jaw and a good jab. Lewis in a tiny ring stood toe to toe and traded with Mercer in a very entertaining fight. Lewis showed he could fight reasonably well on the inside and wasn't just an outside boxer, his uppercuts were especially good. Golota had just given Bowe 2 horrible, career ending beatings. He was seen as a serious threat to Lewis and everyone else. Lewis complained that HBO had mistreated him and snubbed him in the build up to the fight as they thought Golota was going to beat him. They saw Golota as the future not Lewis. Lewis blew Golota away like nothing, the look of shock on Golota's face after the knockdown said it all. You could see him thinking "What the hell just hit me?" he'd clearly never been hit like that before. Holyfield 1 was a clinic despite the horrible scoring. Lewis was in total control winning at least 9 rounds and making Holyfield the then champion look totally ineffective. Michael Grant was seen as the heir apparent and built up to beat Lewis and reign for a long time. Lewis mugged him and Grant was never the same. Tua was a dangerous puncher and top contender he had been built up as a possible future champion and had already beaten a title holder in Ruiz with a highlight reel 1 round KO. Lewis shut him out in a totally one side fight. I must admit this is one of Lewis' most boring fights it was just too one sided. Tyson while past prime still had marquee value and as the fight neared some believed his speed and power could see an upset. What transpired was a total domination he broke Tyson, made him scream in pain in his corner and subdued the wild man of boxing after 8 brutal rounds. Vitali for me was always the superior brother and he proved it in this fight by giving Lewis hell. But Lewis showed as he had before against Bruno that even when he was struggling he could dig deep and turn a fight his way. He wa being outboxed so switched it up, tightened his usually loose guard and walked Vitali down, gradually beating him down until he was left reeling and bloodied and forced the fight to be stopped. Even Lewis at less than 100% and under pressure could show real resolve and turn a fight his way.
You are not the only one to notice that most of Lennox's resume is made up of old, past-prime opponents. Tua wasn't old, but Lennox embarrassed himself with that performance. Grant had already been exposed by Golota. Ruddock had already been handled by Tyson x2 and was later stopped by Tommy Morrison. Golota is his best win when all things are considered. A bit of trivia: Golota sued and won against his doctor for giving him a drug that impaired his performance against Lewis.
Clearly Vitali is Lewis' best win, and an entertaining fight at that. Vitali is the only HOF fighter in his absolute prime beaten by Lewis -- who after losing to Lewis went on to become the lineal champion of the division. Holyfield, Tyson, Tua, Ruddock didn't do anything after losing to Lewis, clearly diminishing the value of those wins for Lewis' record.
Thanks for the answers but I guess I'm just not a fan. Its all "this guy was seen to be this or that" no real prime talent to face and the start of a terrible era in heavyweight boxing. I really think he is the most overrated boxer ever. I'm going to give some of the fights mentioned a go but I find them very boring. I know people love him who have good knowledge of the sport so maybe I'm just missing the point. again, thanks.
