Careful matchmaking is the only reason Lewis didn't get starched more than Rahman and McCall. His chin wasn't the glassiest ever, but it sure wasn't that sturdy either.

Lewis is the only ATG HW champ taken out TWICE in the early rounds by fighters on the level of McCall and Rahman when he held the title. The only one. That says something about his questionable whiskers, no doubt.

As recently as October, Klitschko found a Russian promoter willing to pay each of them 50 million dollars to turn back that clock and Lewis said he would do if the offer were doubled.Now, even if the extra money could be found, the rematch will never happen. Lewis was knocked out by Rahman and McCall early. Lewis is a coward. Hell, I would fight Godzilla for $50,000,000!!!

 

Yeah, i think most observers regarded the McCall stoppage as kind of premature, Lewis was up at 7, appeared shaken but was getting himself together, another second or two and he may have been ok, certainly as Champion he should have been given the benefit of the doubt so for me, Lewis was only flattened once in 44 fights which would hardly suggest a weak chin, he fought plenty of punchers who didn't remotely trouble him, Klitschko hit him with every punch in the book for 6 rounds and he didn't go down, so for me, Lewis usually took a good shot.:deal

 

His chin wasn't glass but sure wasn't iron either. His chin was average. More or less like Wlad's.

 

I reckon it's a bit better than Wlad's but I agree in principle. Neither glass nor iron. I do think we're a bit harsh on HW fighters when it comes to chins sometimes though

 

His chin was average at best, he could take a decent enough shot but was always liable to be hurt if caught by a good puncher.

Yes he was stopped twice, first time he walked into a big shot yet still got up in time and may have been fine had he been allowed to carry on, though I have no issue with the stoppage. The 2nd time he was arrogant as phuck and quite frankly was begging to be KO'ed, out of shape, not acclimatised to the altitude, huffing and puffing in the 5th and walked into the ropes and was caught by a big shot again.

Lewis' problem wasn't his chin it was his arrogance and over confidence, it led him to both those defeats.

 

You can be somewhere inbetween. It's not like everyone is either McCall or Price when it comes to chin is it?

Yeah folks are pretty critical of HW's in general, forgetting that these guys pack the big cannons and that any hard punch landing just right can knock a guy out.
