When discussing the quality of a chin, how does the stage of one's career matter ? At any rate, Louis, in his 25th fight, was taken out by Schmeling, who was not an ATG. He had KO'd four of his previous ten opponents. Rahman was probably a bigger puncher than Max and he had KO'd seven of his previous ten opponents. In both cases, the upset came about as a result of capitalization on a flaw. In Max's case, a tendancy on Joe's part to drop his arm slightly. Schmeling noticed this in Joe's earlier fights ("I sees something") and used it to catch him. In Lennox's case, he got careless and was caught with a shot he didn't see coming. The true tests of superiority in both cases came in the devastating nature of the rematches. Lennox has demonstrated excellent punch resistance on numerous occasions against opponents like Tua, Ruddock, Mercer, Mavrocic etc. Who gets KOd and by what punch is not always a good measure of the quality of a man's chin. If you see a punch coming and can move slightly or brace for it, you survive. If you get caught with a huge shot that you DON'T see coming, you're going down, regardless of the chin. It is a myth that Lewis had a glass chin. In fact, he probably had better punch resistance than Louis.
Lewis doesnt have a glass jaw or a great chin. I'd say his punch resistance was average. He got starched twice. Sparked the **** out and was hurt a few other times. Average chin.
atsch Holyfield couldn't even get a gold medal in the olympics, beaten by former light heavyweight moorer:yep, beating such top fighters as vaughn bean on his rise to the top. He then managed to lose to lennox lewis twice and then it gets worse ruiz beating him and getting a draw. From this point on it's a record of losing fights with the who's who of average 90/00 heavyweights and some bums as well. This guy is a chump hot even fit to hold lennox lewis's jockstrap.
I will give a lot of credit to any guy who can dominate at cruiser AND win a heavyweight title. Evander is an ATG boxer. But as a heavyweight, he is not at the Lewis level.
Lennox Lewis had a good chin but it's very hard to argue that he had great chin. He was rocked by Vitali in the 2nd round by shots that were nothing compared to what Vitali dished out to Sanders in the 8th round. He was rocked by Tua by a lunging left. Rocked badly by Briggs and probably would've been finnished if it didn't happen so late in the round. Knocked out 2 times by less than stellar opposition. Anyway, old Lennox had a better chin than younger Lennox. Old Lennox wouldn't have been knocked out by that punch from McCall. So the final verdict from me: old Lennox - good chin younger Lennox - ok chin
Guys can i jump in on this one ...Jones chin ...ok I dont think Jones had a weak chin ..i believe he was ..in boxing terms ..tagged ..once tagged anyone can go down ...his first ko ..HE didnt even realise he was clocked ..and the second he was scared of being clocked and not fighting HIS way ..Human nature ...
i was a huge fan of lennox lewis, but no way he has a great chin, and that's actually a ridiculous thing to say as any person using common sense would know that a fighter with a great chin doesn't have two losses on his record, both coming from one punch knockouts, not from an accumulation of punches. now saying that, lewis did have an underrated chin, it was better than some people gave credit for, but a great chin? no, that's just an exaggeration.
His chin was okay. He did get KO'd by two second-raters though. I thought he was gone against McCall, and the Rahman fight was a clean 10-count. McCall and Rahman were very low-quality championship contenders. Lennox Lewis is overrated.
Klitschko, the holder of the WBC belt, also revealed yesterday the key player in the failure to set up a rematch with Lennox Lewis. "Lennox invited me to London to talk – just me and him," he said. "When I arrived he was there and so was his mum. As we were talking his mum was scanning me up and down. A couple of hours later I got a call from him. No fight. It was his mum's decision." sorry, lewis only had 2 losses but both of them came from a single punch to his chin that floored him instantly. now you compare it to other former champ, let say tyson... he had 5 losses (discluding holy rematch which was stopped by that...) , yet you never saw him getting floored by single punch like that. I mean, it always takes tons of punches to wear him down until you could floored him. Tua's chin > lewis chin
I think what we have seen was Lennox Lewis improving on his defense and stability, thus allowing him to be prepared at most times, to take punches better. Plus, gaining weight also helped him in strengthening his chin, at the cost of some mobility. But for all his mobility in his younger years, Lewis didn't/couldn't really use that mobility to the extent he could have, so that considerably reduced the overall cost. With Lewis in his later years, arguably his prime, you have a decent chin guarded by a solid defense, enhanced by good stability.
