Lennox Lewis in Today's Heavyweight Division

Miller has fought nobody and Joyce is a novice WTF!

 

Bowe had poor defense and a so-so chin. I think his lack of defense would cause him big problems against the divisions big hitters like Joshua which may be one reason he was kept away from him in his own era.

 

There are some very good punchers around today, Joshua lacks experience but excellent tools, Wilder hits much harder than Rahman or McCall and guys like Ortiz and Povetkin could be dangerous. The division is coming but still young in experience. Lennox would be favored but could be upset. I hear Vlad may be coming back vs Whyte but I saw that on twitter so may be rumor. Fury could give LL some headaches

All in all Lennox would be favored to be champ he did have excellent offensive tools. Young group needs another year or 2 - Fury -Wilder- Joshua top 3 with a chance

 

Given Joshua would have been 3 or 4 years old in Bowe's peak period i don't think his big power would have been the main reason Bowe was kept away from him

 

I seen Joshua get off the floor from one of the best one punch KO guys in the business Vlad who despite his age was dangerous and Anthony was hit clean. Fury did the same against Wilder. Getting off the floor to win is underated - shows much. Lewis was aggresive and complete in his offensive artillary but I dont remember him ever getting off the floor to win which all of the all time great have done.

Both Joshua and Fury have shown some steel, at least once, for sure.

However, did Liston, Tyson or Holyfield ever get off the floor to win?

I'd also hazard a guess that some boxers, who have gotten up off the floor to win, aren't even remembered, let alone considered great. It's what a competitor, who wants to win, does if they can and they're allowed to.

Lewis, having gotten up on the count of six agianst McCall (I), was denied his chance to try and survive the round.

I think a focused Lewis beats them all...although I think it’s early for the big three (Fury Wilder and AJ). One will rise to the top and we can say they would stand a chance against Lewis. They all have their flaws (what fighter doesn’t?). As of now I can’t say any would beat a top ten ATG but in five ten years maybe my opinion will change depending who’s the best...as far as Miller goes he doesn’t even belong in a conversation as of yet. He’s entertaining to watch but he’s kind of a side show (gets hit to easily imo). Hope he fights AJ at MSG so I can catch my first HW title fight live.

 

It's well documented that Lewis was inconsistent, and was prone to defensive lapses and lack of focus. The flipside is that he also had nights where he put everything together and demolished highly regarded fighters in double quick time.

He could feasibly blow out any or all of Wilder, Fury and Joshua within a few rounds. His top level is higher than any of those have shown in their careers to date. On an off-night though he could feasibly lose to any of them, or even those on the next rung down.

I think over an extended period of time in today's division he would prove himself the best heavyweight of the era. However, chances are it would be a bumpy ride with one or two hiccups along the way.

 

We never saw him against Tyson, Lewis, or Ruddock all big hitters and one of whom stopped him quickly in the amateurs. Holyfield is not a huge puncher and thus not in the best position to take advantage of Bowe's woeful lack of defense. Bowe's opponents had no trouble landing on him and neither would Joshua. Only this time he's in with someone who can really crack.

 

Gonzalez,Butler,Cooper, were all good punchers.

 

I think would be the de facto #1 HW, for a time at least. I might be laughed at but I think Fury has the right blend of physical and technical attributes to give Lewis a very tough fight. I also think at some point he'd fall victim to a big upset KO just like he did in his own era.

A poster earlier made a very good point that Lewis needed a great coach like Emanuel Steward to fulfil his potential. Before Steward came into the picture, Lewis was sloppy with his punches, easy to hit and had poor footwork. With the inferior coaching available today would today's version of Lewis be the guy that won the undisputed title or the guy that was made to look average vs an old Tony Tucker and getting outboxed by Frank Bruno for 6 rounds?

 

Gonzalez and Cooper never stopped anyone world class. I wouldn't classify either as punchers at the world level. Butler has a stoppage of Tubbs but beyond that there's not enough for me to classify him as a big hitter.

None of these guys have the credentials of a Tyson, a Lewis, or a Joshua.
