Lewis has a guest feature spot in this months Ring magazine. As well as talking about the pivotal rounds of his career against such as Briggs,Holyfieldx2,Tyson,Klitchko,Bruno.etc,he also touches on five opponents he missed. Moorer. "Moorer was ok ,he was a small heavyweight and a southpaw,.Not too many people wanted to fight him because of that.We came really close to fighting, but he didn't concern me.Moorer was too small and he couldn't move like I could." Byrd."He came to one of my press conferences when he had a belt and said he wanted to fight me.I told him that I was a lion and he was a bird.Like Moorer he was just too small for a heavyweight of my size." Ibeabuchi. "I thought he would have been a good opponent for me in terms of being tough and durable. But in terms of it being a great fight or him being a good pugilist-no-I would have outclassed and beaten him on points." Wlad."His downfall was that he did the same thing in every fight. After a while someone's gonna say,"you're not hitting me with that right hand, you're not hitting me with that left hook."Wladimir didn't have the punch variety and later on ,it cost him when he lost Manny Steward." Bowe."I would have knocked him out and he knows it,because I told him so. I rarely tell people they're getting nocked out ,but when I do I mean it.Bowe wasn't committed enough, and anyone who hasa fridge in their bedroom has problems." Thoughts?
All good points but as we know stuff happens so you never know how two people face off as in regard to the other fighters mentioned. I dont see Byrd being a problem but IKE is a question Mark. Wlad not sure how a Lewis-Vlad fight would end IMO opinion it depends what version shows up.Prime for prime each man at his best could go either way. LL is spot on about Bowe
Bowe's the only real question mark there, for me. I think Lewis would have taken the bout very seriously; not let complacency creep in. Had it come off, he would have won the fight, but it would have been a lot tougher than Lewis suggests. Ike was on the rise along side the Klitschko's, as Lewis was aiming for Holyfield and Tyson. Had he continued, beyond '99, I think he'd have needed to get by Vitali and/or Wlad first, before being in the mix. It might have happened, post-Tyson, if he was still a contender by then. Hard to tell how he'd have handled the power of Lewis, though.
Been reading the mag myself today about Lewis. Im convinced that Lennox, in the right frame of mind and focused, could beat the majority of heavyweight s .Only prime Ali ,Holmes and Foreman are the ones I'm cautious of .
Maybe Lennox could enlighten us to be the ONLY Champ in ANY weight class who got ko'ed not once but TWICE with ONE shot by genuine ham and eggers...........nobody would have ever heard of McCracken or Hasbeen otherwise. Best he faced, lol, that must be the prime Tyson impersonator or worn out prime Oldyfield who went life and death right afterwards with the Don King manufactured Huggy Bear. So Lemmie should be credited with bringing never beens to the front page by graciously letting them knocking him out and helping washed up Pensioners one last Hurrah, Bravo, that Lemmie fellow sure spreads the wealth around.
I read it - I actually think he pays Wlad respect in a backhanded kind of way- he clearly states he would ko bowe. He says both Moorer and Byrd were too small for him. ( I would of loved to see Lewis against an elite southpaw) and he says he would outclass Ike. But he doesn’t clearly state his opinion on Wlad In regards to how he would fare against him. Interesting.
He dropped a belt to void facing Ruiz, so there is a case he did miss out on him. What did Grant really do for Lewis legacy? In hindsight, Ruiz or Sanders would have been better opponents. I think Lewis pretty much fought the best out there, but he has some misses.
It's more a case of Ruiz missing out on Lewis. Lewis was prepared to fight Ruiz. An offer was made but, for some reason, Ruiz was not available until July 2000. Lewis wasn't prepared to wait and fought Grant (the preferred option by HBO), to earn a nice payday (an easy one, too, as it turned out) while the court battle with the WBA went on. The WBA won and Lewis was stripped anyway (and there's more to the story about those shenanigans). Sanders didn't become ranked until his win over Wlad in Q1 2003. Sanders wasn't a viable contender before Lewis' June 21st date, later that year. So, no - neither Ruiz nor Sanders are misses.
Lewis dropped a belt to avoid the Ruiz fight. I don't see how you can pin this on Ruiz. Sanders name was mentioned a few times as a possible opponent. He was never selected. Botha was!. Surely Sanders would have taken the opportunity if it presented itself, but you are correct on the rankings.
