well, I was revising his career, and this guy was great, his only fault was his chin. it is because i pick probably prime foreman ,marciano, and probably peak frazier and peak tyson to beat him. IN THE FIRST FIGHT!!!. AS MUCH as I LOVE FOREMAN I THINK THAT LEWIS WOULD FIGHT SMART IN THE REMATCH AND HE WOULD TAKE A DECISION, BUT I THINK THAT HE WOULD GET KO IN THE FIRST FIGHT. i think that if lewis had iron chin, he would have been as great as ali and greater than holmes. he was big, he had fast hands, he was very intelligent in the ring, he had good stamina for his size, he had great hitting power, good jab, good skill, good heart.... he only needed better chin.
to be honest I don't see the glass chin thing. he got knocked down and stopped twice. In the McCall fight he should have kept on fighting I disagree with the stoppage there. He took shots from Mercer, Tyson(a shot Tyson, but he still took some hooks IF I REMEMBER?), Briggs, Tua, and Holyfield. His chin is proven imo. It's just a matter of getting caught, perfectly on the chin which was what happened in the first McCall fight. that punch was an absolute bomb and probably would have stopped most heavyweights. you can't hold his chin against him imo
I agree that Lewis had a solid chin, the Mason, Bruno & Vitali fights are more proof of it. To elaborate on your point about the Tyson fight, i think Zombie Mike landed some stiff jabs (though with nowhere near their old "snap" or velocity) in the 1st round which caused some swelling, but i don't recall any flush hooks landing.
i never said "glass" chin in my comment, but obviously he did not have iron chin, mccall or rahman were not massive punchers and he was hurt and almost stoped by bruno, yes bruno was hard puncher but he never did hurt tyson as he did with lewis.definitely i think that foreman, liston, tyson, frazier and marciano could well knock him out.
Forgot about the Vitali fight. That was a good example too because Lewis wasn't even in shape and he still took Vitali's punches flush. I haven't watched the Tyson fight in a while, I don't really remember the details like you do but yeah I just remember Tyson catching Lewis a few times Yeah. I agree with you. The bruno fight was more of a style thing, in my opinion. His chin was solid, but not iron. Those fighters would probably knockout Lewis, but then again, I see Frazier and Marciano having trouble getting inside on Lewis without eating uppercuts and jabs. Tyson at least was very fast and would cut off the ring on Lewis, but those two weren't really fast. Frazier espescially would hit uppercuts bad. Marciano would go down low and negate the uppercut and the jab, and Marciano did have an excellent right hand which would certainly land better then Frazier's left hook. I do see all of these guys stopping him eventually. I give Foreman, Tyson, and Liston the best chances of doing it early.
What were Lewis flaws? I dont think he had a bad chin, but it wasnt good enough to fight like he wanted to deep down. His flaws in my opinion were big feet, mediocre footwork, lack of infighting coordination and bad balance. Alot of that was perfected and covered up, but overall it was never complete. His attributes were height, smarts, discipline, power, and a tremendous will to win. Lewis was a great fighter, but not the greatest physically gifted fighter in my opinion.
lennox lewis had an iron chin  the man was out twice by a single punch, briggs almost knocked him out with a jab lewis had a solid chin, not glass but no way it was iron
I think he was overrated as hell, reigned over a weak era. God awful IMO. I find it odd that many of the same people who hate the Klits love Lewis and IMO he was pretty similar to Vitali, maybe even less exciting.
I personally think H2H on his best day, Lewis would have been a handful for any fighter. The guys with the best chance of beating him however, aren't the smaller fighters such as Frazier, or Marciano, I think it's guys like Tyson (bigger and faster than Frazier), Ali, Foreman, and possibly Holmes. But he could conceivably beat a couple of these fighters. Wouldn't call his chin granite, but I don't think it would influence the outcome of any of these fights, with the possible exception of Foreman and perhaps Tyson.
This is essentlail true. If you take away his two knockout losses (or even just the latter one) then his legacy starts to get compared to the verry best heavyweights of all time.
so, let me understand... marciano gets KD'd by lightheavies and cruisers BUT he has a solid chin and would defeat a 235 pound monster puncher with length and skills... who has a suspect chin because he was KD'd twice in what was without doubt the heaviest punching era of the heaviest punching division. OK, now I understand.
lewis got KNOCKED OUT though . Anyway, Walcott and Moore were better and more trickier fighters then Rahman and Lewis.
If Walcott was so damned tricky why did he get beat so often? Too tricky for his own good, I suspect. I am so tired of the effectiveness of his little dances and sidesteps getting over-rated. I am concerned with effective fighting, not fancy dance steps.
