I don't buy his spin that he would beat young Tyson because of their actual fight. He had a chance to prove it and preferred a second Olympic trip.

Unless you're Lennox Lewis, a world-class amateur makes a run for Olympic gold, accepts the results, and then turns pro, for one simple reason: time.

Lewis benefited from four big breaks: Tyson's self-destruction; Steward's hand in correcting his flaws; today's broad-daylight secret: performance enhancing drugs; a modern abundance of limited-skills, limited-stamina punchers that a good technician like Lewis could dominate. He thus dominated till old age, like the Klitschkos now.

Bottom line: around 2002, Lewis began bellowing: "I want Tyson!" In my view, he could and should have said something of the sort around 1987. But he didn't.

It's a tad pathetic the way he tries to vindicate himself by saying things like that he would always beat Tyson or that he has no doubt he would always beat Vitali. Just can't admit that some guys were simply competitive and truly belonged in the same ring with him! Can't even admit that after all those years being fourty something accomplished boxer. Like a big, insecure teenage boy :dead

Not that it's very, very blatant, but really do see it like that, to a big enough degree.

    :deal

    * if not '87 then somewhat later but not 2002 :patsch
** not even getting into the Vitali thing. Will just point out that saying he didn't give him a (promised) rematch because Vitali didn't offend him like Tyson did............................ phuleeeaase....

Yeah, heavyweight champions of the world tend to be a little arrogant. Go figure, winning the toughest prize in sports, all that hard work, making all those trained killers hit the canvas as you claw your way to the top...God forbid, you start to think of yourself as pretty capable.

Lewis vs. Tyson, best for best, would have been a great fight. Too huge hitters with the tools to win. I'd have loved to see that fight. Heavyweight gold.

Lewis showed he was man enough to fight a younger, stronger opponent and rough him up and get him out of the fight when he fought Vitali. Tyson showed he could handle length and strength in several fights. They both had everything they needed to beat the tar out of eachother, and I think it would have been a great great fight.

I think I'd probably tip my hat to Lewis, but I don't know that I'd bet on him. Those two guys were animals with power and fire. Anything can happen.

Sure. Why aren't Tyson or Holyfield like Lewis though? Tyson is always honest and humble talking about his defeats/flaws/doubts. Evander makes no excuses and doesn't seem to really praise himself much either. It takes someone a tad insecure to focus that much on convincing people how good you are, to take it all that seriously.

I consider "I'm still going to be the heavyweight champion at 50 years old" to be fairly arrogant.

Tyson isn't to far removed from "I'm the greatest, and I'm going to eat your kids!" either. But I'll agree, he seems pretty humble now.

The ego is strong with most champions. Pretty sure Lennox isn't insecure. He's having a ton of fun with his life right now, last I've heard, despite how hard leaving boxing was for him.

Pretty amusing to see the champions of my day commentating, doing Broadway, and selling BBQ sauce.

Didn't Holy make a whole heap of excuses for his lack luster performances?
