Yes. I believe he was sentenced to 5 years and HD appealed it to the Supreme Court on religious grounds and won.
No argument from me. I don't think anyone else was both sports celebrity and a political figure at the same time.
It has a lot of foundation. Most people who think they know about Muhammad Ali, know very little about him. Both people on the street and in the media. The furore against Tyson Fury's controversial comments exposed many of them in the British media, as they used Ali as a counter example of a "great personality" while bashing Fury for making bigoted comments. The irony ! The average person I've met who has a Ali T-shirt or poster, know very little about him. Usually the Rumble in the Jungle and "Float like a Butterfly". Some think he went to prison for refusing to fight in Vietnam. The whole point about Muhammad Ali is that he transcended boxing. He's a genuine cultural icon. The majority of people who like him don't know much about him. He just seems cool to them.
Cheers for that Van. Had the peace corps been disbanded by that time then? Because I have been reading some of Paul Theroux's books and he seems to have avoided the services by joining the peace corp, and teaching in Africa. Malawi in fact.
He wasn't referring to the monarchy itself ( around a thousand years old, not 600), but rather, to the soap opera saga that was Lady Di's life from shortly after her marriage till her untimely death.
So now it's some other girl called Kate something or others turn. They bring in new blood every now and again to break the inbreeding, and always have. The difference these days is the media revel in it, whereas before they were just tame little lap dogs. The lady herself has done a wonderful job of dedicating her life to her people, for more than 60 years, but her family leave a lot to be desired.
If some think he went to prison for refusing the draft they are correct he did . But only temporarily on May the 8th1967 he was photographed and fingerprinted and released on a $5000 bail. I don't claim to be any expert on Ali or any other boxing figure but I lived through those times watched his fights onTV and closed circuit and went to see him give a talk in ,and to spar exhibitions. Bought the books about him etc.It is a personal regret that I never saw him fight live, but being in the UK opportunities were limited for me. i
