Let's be clear: his raw strength and power were the foundations for his success. Nobody he ever faced out-muscled or out-gunned him. He was blessed with the kind of heavy-boned, brute strength that few before ever were. His opponents who pushed him close in these departments: McCall - not in punching power, but in physical strength. He seemed to have Lewis' physicality in check. Rahman - very similar to McCall. Vitali - probably the opponent who was most closely matched in both departments to a past-his-best, out-of-shape Lewis. A younger Lewis would surely have been better in both areas. Bruno - seemed the stronger of the two on the night. But this was a green Lewis who had yet to fill out and mature. And it was Lewis' power which bailed him out on a night in which he was unable to assert his physicality as he would do throughout much of the rest of his career. As Michael Grant's corner told a crying Grant after their fight was stopped: "Ain't Lennox strong."
Like this thread. Agree on most points with you. Lewis seemed definitely stronger after 30 when he added more muscles to his frame.
Lewis was never appreciated by the Americans, I remember the many hammerings he got by commentators and boxing fans in the US, many of them said he was too negative and never used his size and talent to maximum effect. They wanted Lewis to wage war, be explosive and excite them in every fight. Some of the same people now wet themselves over Hopkins, Ward and Mayweather, it's all boxing genius, years of dedication, experience and ring IQ. My point is don't expect most US fight fans on here to say many nice things about Lennox simply because he wasn't American.
Why did Tua come up in the conversation? Because my location is listed as NZ? I just don't get the point of a thread about a former champ which doesn't really tell us more than we already know. Yes he was a big strong guy, and yes he used it to his advantage. Case closed. Move on. :hi:
His effective use of his size and reach advantage were his forte He took a lot of criticism for keeping his opponent at bay on the outside of his long jab where he could take them apart .....but why would you -not- use your advantage to its full potential ? Same as Wlad does
Lewis might be the strongest heavyweight ever. I would have loved to see him up against George Foreman. Would Lewis have boxed and moved? Or would he have taken it inside and try and outmuscle Foreman?
Lennis size was his biggest redeeming factor in addition to excellent boxing skills acquired via Emanuel steward, did well do make up for the face.
Lennox Lewis was second only to Muhammad Ali. Ali is Lennox hero too Lennox had one flaw he lost focus at times. He paid for that too with his only two losses. The rematches were a different story when he was focused An undertrained out of shape Lennox still managed to almost take Vitali's face off just imagine what a 100 % Lennox would do to him. Without that flaw Lennox would be pushing Ali for #1.
Holyfield was a much more impressive Heavyweight in his prime.. Lennox beat both Holyfield and Tyson past their prime and Vitali was still an unknown fighter back then who finally became mainstream after his performance against lennox.
Lennox beat Holyfield TWICE He was robbed first time In actual fact the second fight was closer. Lennox would have beaten Holyfield earlier except he lost to Bowe. Evander would have honoured the deal they all signed, Bqwe didnt Tyson ducked Lewis too King gave him $4 mil to step aside even
Same **** different day when Lennox is mentioned. Facts remain Lewis was 37 when he beat Vitali, was meant to fight Johnson and I would put my life on the line when I say if Lewis had fought and destroyed Johnson...which he should have done he would have carried on his career and the same people who are saying he was shot or under prepared would be the same ones swinging off his sack about how great he is. Let's not forget this is the same Lewis who took Tyson, a shot too **** Tyson, to court to enforce their rematch. And his two losses are legit. Every Lewis fan has an excuses why he lost, under prepared, weighed in 3lbs heavier than normal and the obviously greatest one a lucky punch. LMAO Lewis was great but prime Holyfield would run him out of the ring. He barely s****ed past a past his prime Evander.
