Agree. It was an excellent heavyweight fight, something you don't say often regarding Lennox. It was Lewis's first real gut check. Mercer out jabbed Lewis and took it too the trenches. It's a shame Lewis didn't fancy the rematch as we the fans missed out.
Unknown to who? He was a previous WBO champion who had made multiple defences. I was there when he bounced Herbie Hide off the canvas 6 times in 1999 to win the WBO belt. Everyone knew who Vitali was. And even if he was unknown, how does that make any difference to the fact that he was the best-eqiupt fighter to beat Lennox who Lennox ever fought. Hands-down the best. And bear in mind too that Lennox was undeniably past his own best - probably by about 7 years.
Lewis was bigger and stronger than Foreman. But this does not take into account the difference in eras. Lewis' era were all bigger. It's a similar argument to the "who has the greatest chin" debate. Chuvalo was being hit by far lighter fighters to McCall. McCall's chin, and Lewis' power, are superior to their 70s counterparts.
lewis is the best h2h heavyweight in history. UD's prime holyfield. Actually many people think the slower conservative lewis was prime. Look at physical prime, early 90s although he wasnt as smart, he was just so fast and explosive.
I would estimate Lewis' prime to be about 1996-2000. The fighters who possibly fought a prime Lewis might very be: Morrison, Mercer, Briggs, McCall II, Akinwande, Golota, Holyfield I, Grant, Tua. If I had to pin it down to a single year, I'd probably go 1997 (Golota). He seemed on top of his game at that time. Physically, and mentally.
You're not going to get a lot of support on that position. Lewis wasn't appreciated enough when he was active, but he's overrated like mad nowadays.
Oh I know. I'm a Lewis fan but he has turned into this mythical beast who only lost due to lucky punches and was virtually flawless in every other fight. He was great top 5 ATG at heavyweight but he wasn't unbeatable.
Prime Holyfield stops the early 90's Lewis late imo. An legend prime Lewis barely s****ed by a Holyfield who was starting to slip. In a nutshell the Holyfield of the Bowe fights beat any version of Lewis.
Based on what? Bowe was the first big, prime heavyweight Holyfield had fought. And Holyfield lost 2/3 of those fights. Could even have easily been 3/3. One of them by 8th round TKO. Lewis had the style, size and power to win that fight at any stage. Bowe made Holyfield look better than he was by standing right in front of him and trading. Lewis wouldn't have given Holyfield that luxury.
