nope he did well to get out he has his money and his brains intact not many heavyweight champs can say that he was hit and miss at the end / he never bothered to train at all for his last fight / i forget his opponents name now {Kirk johnson}? but it was an expected lewis blowout/ the opponent pulled out and klitchko stepped in and lewis was lucky klitchko had facial injurys because whales blow less taking a breath than lewis was between rounds. he did it v rahman 1 fight as well fighting at altitude in south africa/ needed to be fit and in shape instead he was disinitrested and lethargic clearly not inn great shape and he lost wanted pride in the second fight/trained hard and was in shape and rahman was taken to school and ktfo with ease. if you cnt be bothered to train in boxing its time to retire.
he retired after the average afge of HW champion shedding the title responsibilities, so no, he retired at the right time according to them. You have a right of course to disagree with historys HW champions, but I personally would pick their opinions over yours on when they should retire. Pretty much everyone would go with the opinions of the worlds best pros over a keyboard warriors opinion, everytime. And after destroying one of the guys who was one of the long term champions of the 21st century, an emphatic statement on his superiority.
Good post by sean that I agree with. That said, he probably, assuming he was motivated enough and the Klitschkos weren't around, have continued until about 42ish.
He said he is like a fine wine and gets better with age. He definitely wanted to continue in boxing for many years after the Tyson fight, probably until at least 40. The Klitschko’s put a end to that though.
if anyeon disagrees with all the HW champions in history about when to retire, perhaps they would like to explain how they are all wrong. start with sullivan and go up to lennox. if they dont try to, then they are lying.
It robbed us from the rematch and made linealship even more irrelevant, but I think he took the right route for his own good. One of my favorite Heavyweights of all time. Weird thing was that even 10 years into retirement some deluded fans still believed he could come back and retake the championship, while he seemed to be on the slide at 38 (which is normal of course).
He said on the Jonathan Ross Show (a chat show in England) that he'd been looking to get out for a while, and that he was going through the motions at the end but didn't feel he could retire while he was still dominant, I think he did plan to give Klitschko a rematch initially, but when he got back into training he just couldn't do it any more. I think he got out at the right time if that's the case, you're kinda damned if you do, damned if you don't in boxing, you carry on and get flattened and people will say you should have bowed out earlier, you go out as a champion and people will say you retired too early. Would have been interesting, had he lost to Klitschko, would that have given him the spark to carry on? I don't think I would want to go out on a loss if I was in his shoes. But I'm not actually convinced Klitschko was going to win that fight anyway, Lennox was definitely blowing out of his arse and tired, but Klitschko looked tired too and disorientated when he made his way back to the corner just before the doctor intervened. A Lennox Lewis uppercut will do that to you.
Of course he would've ..he was trying to get Tyson to fight again AFTERthe Klitchko fight and RJJ ??? He had admitted a 3 fight plan after Vitali...except Vitali a little better than he assumed..Vitali became his mandatory and bounced back much quicker than he thought and then retired.
Even without the Klitschko's I doubt he would of hung around for much longer. He was basically only still boxing then because he was looking for a Tyson rematch. When money is the only thing keeping you in the sport, it's time to quit. Lewis' hunger was waning he had talked about retiring before and the Rahman loss highlighted his lack of focus. He would of likely lost to a big underdog in a fight he wasn't expected to lose and either retired or tried to avenge the loss and then retire.
There was only one real fight out there (offered and ordered for $50m) vs a guy with two career injuries (knee and shoulder) and he ran away from it despite having no injuries himself. Whatever his fans say he left unfinished business.
why fans, u mean everyone including all hw champs in lewis history. so u mean whatever all the hw champs say, they r wrong and u r right. ok
Well it is a fact that Lewis tried to make matches with Roy Jones and Kirk Johnson after the Vitlai match Lewis only retired after seeing Vital destroy Johnson and Sanders, with the WBC ordering the re-match or he loses his last belt. So heck yes, Lewis would have fought on if not for Vitali.
