I clearly, unequivocally remember Lewis saying he was going to 'snatch the S from Roys chest' and trying to hype a fight with Roy on hbo.

This thread is what age does Lewis retire if not for Vitali. The Hopkins assertion is simply the OPs answer to the threads question. My answer is, had he fought Kirk that night instead of vitali, he goes on to keep fighting until he has a similarly tough fight (i cant remember who else besides vitali i would have picked to give him a rough time) maybe its one fight more, maybe its three. Who knows. But Im fairly confident he fights on. Just imo.

If you reverse the fighters and had a 38 year old Vitali who had pulled a win out of the bag against a Lewis despite being woefully underprepared for a fighter of that quality my opinion would be the same and I'd think it was still a good time to bow out on top.

    Would you?

why are not havng threads about -

what if sullivan, dempsey, corbett, johnson, louis, ali, liston, marciano, etc etc etc?

why is it just with prime vitali getting destroyed by worst ever lewis? surely its not that bitter a pill as every other retirement post win/defeat?

21 days aside how Vitali looked in the fight with Sanders likely impacted Lewis to stay retired after he announced it.

There was at least 18 million for Lewis if he wanted the re-match and my points stand that Lewis tried to make fights with Roy Jones and Kirk Johnson well before he announced he retired on Feb 6, 2004.

If Vitali was retired in 2003, do you think Lewis fights on? I say yes.

Vitali was ahead on points, Vitali broke Lewis' nose, most people don't know that. Lewis knew he could not beat Vitali in a rematch, the only reason the fight was stopped was because of a cut! Why did Lewis turn down huge money for a rematch? Lewis knew better, he was lucky to dodge the bullet!

try to get motivated at age 38 for a prime guy that is so far below you, that you stopped inside 6 in your worst form ever.

what would be the point of even showing up for more than 5 rounds next time?

Being booed after the fight and Vitali suddenly becoming the new darling should be motivation enough....knowing you was in with the first real fighter since Holyfield should be motivation.

Lewis seemed to find the motivation when he was trying to force Tyson into a rematch he didn't want.

He was at the tailend of his career, he'd accomplished everything he'd wanted to accomplish, had enough money to let him live extremely comfortably for the rest of his days, what incentive was there for him to take the rematch other than pride? He was a multi-millionaire with an assured place in history as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of modern times, his ego wasn't going to take much of hit by not fighting someone he'd already beaten just because some people think he didn't win decisively enough.

I find it entertaining couch warriors speak about how you should end two decades of an international sporting career - yesterday one troll was on about Lewis should have gone to the death. :eaea:
