Lewis wasnt even decent until he and Manny Steward got together? This is a joke right? Just because a fighter got knocked out -- by a murderous puncher no less -- and loses a fight or two but displayed great talent, ability, and skills prior to that one or two losses doesnt mean they are just decent. He was a VERY good fighter with a great pedigree before Steward who just had a few chinks in his armor. Far from decent.
I never understood the hate for Lewis, he was great, fought everyone and was exciting, what more can you ask for? Lewis is top 3 best heavyweights ever.
He and Vitali are my two favorite HW's of the modern era though if I had to choose between the two I'd take LL, and IMO they are 2 of the best h2h HW's of all time, with LL being #1 for me. Great video as always @Rumsfeld, a lot of times the rest of us watch and enjoy your videos(and take a lot of knowledge from them) without truly understanding how much time, effort, research, film watching, and passion you put into these and unfortunately take it for granted without meaning to. I'll be real, I certainly have in the past, though it was unintended, but from the bottom of my heart I am sorry for that and cant put I to words how truly much I love and enjoy watching your videos, and can't thank you enough for making them for our entertainment out of sheer passion for expressing your boxing perspective through film. None do it better.
I watched that fight ringside in AC with a beautiful ukrainian girl, so two of peter’s kd’s came from rabbit punches. Wlad looked like crap , like bambi on ice , but still outboxed peter. And Peter was not bum he could punch unlike Miller.
It's not good at all. My issue was that you said Lennox 'wasn't a decent fighter' until he started working with Steward. Do you see how saying a fighter who was a world champion with multiple title defenses under his belt was not event 'decent' is like...really, REALLY stupid?!
I agree that Tua was better (more skilled) boxer than Peter. Peter, however, was much taller and he was in great shape against Wlad while Tua was in absolutely afwul shape against Lennox - 245 lbs for a 5'9'' guy is extremely bad weight. He weighed in 12 lbs more than he did against Byrd and 19 lbs more than he did against Ike. Also, it wasn't a shut-out. Tua won 1, 2 and 3 rounds on judges' cards as Lewis was beyond catious in the first 4 rounds. As for Lewis not using clinches against Tua - he just didn't need to because of Tua's awful footwork. But Lewis initiated 86 clinches in less than 8 rounds against corpse of Mike Tyson - more than 10 clinches per round!!! Wlad would be proud for Lewis clinching/holding performance in the Tyson fight. Lewis also was holding awfully lot against washed up Holyfield.
Weighing less against Chris Byrd obviously doesn't mean much since he lost that fight. He was hovering around 245 when he stopped Nicholson , Oquendo and Moorer. Weighing 245 doesn't suggest he was in awful shape cos he looked quick in the ring and bobbed n weaved from side to side a lot which requires good conditioning. Sam Peter was taller but he moved forward in slow motion with zero upper body or head movement. Lewis would have blown him completely out without a single clinch. There's no way Lewis would have been running away in panic from Peters or clinching and illegally hugging as bad as Wlad was. Had Wlad been deducted a point like he should have been , he would have easily lost the fight. Lewis produced an impressive hit n move boxing performance against Tua. He controlled him with the 1-2 , ripped him with body hooks , stepped off to the side - rince and repeat. Not that difficult for him. He landed 100 more punches on a harder to hit Tua than Wlad landed on a wide open Sam Peters. These two fight show you the huge gap in talent between Lewis and Wlad.
It's still a mark how good Lewis was. Either way you have to count that as it was a win in itself , i.personally count that as his second best fight and know he lucked out but it is what it is. Top 5 Lewis wins in reality are not that wow factor . But Lewis was a coaster, he didn't like taking chances when he knew he couldn't end a fight quickly. I feel Lewis best win was Holyfield , then A very watered down Tyson but dangerous one . Vitali really showed how tough Lewis was though , without that fight certain doubts would creep in , Lewis overall very difficult to get by.
