Lennox Lewis vs Jack Dempsey at their bests

Dempsey's chances against Lewis would be a little better than mine. I'd have no chance against Lewis in a boxing ring.......
Even in my prime 30 years ago.

 

Beating Willard is 1 thing, I am not sure about Lewis.

 

What if world class doesn't translate across eras. Those big guys lost to other little guys like Gunboat Smith which makes Dempsey beating them less impressive

 

Lewis isn’t anywhere near Tunney in terms of ability or Gibbons and plenty of others. Lennox is big and pretty good but not the best Dempsey has seen.

 

But therein lays my point. The thread clearly states "at-their-bests".

Lewis was clearly not at his best against McCall and Rahman so why are they mentioned?

I'd be worried about anyone thinking those two fights represent the best of him.

At any rate Lewis would flog the bejesus out of Dempsey for mine and i'd put thousands on it.

 

Then you woudl still have to conclude that he coped very well with a height/reach/weight disparity.

 

Regardless of who was better at their best, we woudl have to conclude that the worst version of Dempsey, was always going to be worse than the worst version of Lewis.

Totally different career arcs.

 

You don't need to persuade me that Lewis was much better than men like Fulton and Willard, but even on that basis, wouldn't we expect them to have done at least as well as the smaller heavyweights that Dempsey fought?

The fact that they didn't is significant in my eyes.

Lewis was the best big heavyweight of all time ... way too big for Dempsey ...
