Fan of great fighters. Marciano like Louis. Like Dempsey and like Ali are all ATG fighters with ATG attributes. Jerry Quarry does not rate here.
I think we can agree to match these men in their respective primes. If that is the case we can throw out the Sharkey and Tunney fights.
S, why do U hold Jack Dempsey in such great contempt ? Surely you must know [or don't care] that the 32 year old Jack Dempsey was OUT of the ring for THREE long years, WITHOUT ONE tuneup fight, when he foolishly tackled a prime Gene Tunney and Jack Sharkey...You surely must know this but your hatred of Dempsey knows no bounds... Try this S. How would your hero Rocky Marciano have fared if after he retired, Marciano went to Hollywood, banged every starlet in sight, and for 3 years screwed around and tackled a Gene tunney or Jack Sharkey both in their primes...? Well I who had seen Rocky ringside and admired him greatly would venture to say Marciano would have missed 90% of his punches instead of the 50% he did in his prime...Remember S, though it may hurt you, when we compare fighters like Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Ali, we are talking about these men in their PRIMES, and you should try to be a little fair to these great fighters above. Try it, it will not hurt. I promise....atsch
It would be the closest thing to legalised murder there could ever be. The first big right hand that Lewis lands and we are talking highly qualified medical support teams need to be rushing into the ring. Not some fool counting or another one looking at a stop watch. A hopeless mismatch, almost as daft as Lewis / Marciano.
Dempsey's got a puncher's chance, but I have to go with Lewis here. Still, both fighter's showed inconsistencies in focus and preparation after taking the title, so it all depends on who shows up to fight. :nut
It's more than a punchers chance. Dempsey is too often lumped into a Frazier or Marciano type/skilled fighter. He was not. As per Tunney "Dempsey was no crude slugger but instead a meld of boxer and puncher." Arcel thought Roberto Duran was the closest thing to Dempsey he ever saw. Then if you really look at the films of Dempsey you see the ultra short punches, two fisted punching power, the head and upper body movement making him a tough target. Dempsey was far removed from just a puncher. I myself have no idea who would win but certainly of the two the more highly skilled was Dempsey. In fact not many past hwt champions were blessed with a set of boxing skills as good as Dempsey.
I agree that Dempsey was a complete fighter, I just have a hard time seeing him win a decision here. I think he'll need to end this in six and that's a tough task against a focused Lewis. Just a gut feeling, nothing more.
I don't think that Dempsey could have done any more with the available competition, to prove that he was capable of overcoming a big size disparity, and stylistically suited to fighting super heavyweights. Ten out of ten, as far as we can test the principle.
Because prime Lennox Lewis is about as good as an old Jess Willard who had fought 10 rounds in the past 4 years?
Which of those supposed super heavies had an inkling of Lewis' athletic abilities and long time grooming in the sport? We aren't talking about some run of the mill superheavy but quite possibly the greatest superheavy in the sport's history.
