Dempsey has more than a punchers chance here, although he is not favourable. It would be silly to doubt his power, I'm more worried about how evasive and elusive he can be whilst also being aggressive against someone that's as well schooled as Lennox. He'd need to pick his spots perfectly, try and avoid fighting on the inside too much, but would likely succumb to a clean power shot from Lewis eventually. Lewis inside 7, Jack may well give him a bit of a run for his money and puts up a commendable effort at the very least.
Except two Muricans who's names were Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman. Other than that you're spot on :good
My point is that these comparisons are ridiculous. Lewis was a skilled, athletic giant who also benefited from major advances in technique and training. They couldn't have even fathomed a fighter like him in the 1920s. I don't know why you guys insist on pretending that these men would have been credible opponents for him. I wouldn't even pick Dempsey to beat all of the best light-heavyweights of the past 30 years.
It is a waste of thread space if one is honest. I mean I can understand some of these matches which feature Ali vs Louis or Holmes vs Marciano.. But placing anybody pre Louis's era against men from the 70's onward is ridiculous. Several years ago I believe someone started a conversation featuring Lewis vs Fitszimmons. Not sure if it was here or on another forum... I mean seriously?
:good Too many comic books when they were younger, probably. They think that "ATG" heavyweights are a special race of superheroes who can trounce all mere mortal heavyweights and compete with all other ATG ones. It's silly.
I disagree with you. I think that the number of heavyweights who were in Dempsey's class as a finisher, could be counted on the fingers of one hand, even to this day.
I couldn't begrudge one who thinks Lewis would win. He definitely has the right mix of caution and spite to do so. That said, Dempsey has a real shot, and I don't mean a David Tua type shot, crudely lunging in and plodding about. Jack has the speed and length to surprise Lewis. The uppercut is the danger shot but that head will be slipping, bobbing, weaving, and Lennox has to gamble to counter. He miss-shoots the uppercut and cops a left it might be over. Dempsey early or Lewis late.
I actually give Dempsey more of a chance against Lewis than Marciano because he was faster of both foot and hand, and quicker into range. That's just me.
