Fair call, it's not just his size that bothers me, i just don't think he's half the fighter many make him out to be. So many are more proven yet pale in comparison acclaim wise, which is just bull****. I rate Dempsey for what he was, the greatest heavyweight of his day and a fantastic fighter of his day. I won't however be seduced by the legend.
If Dempsey were brought allong today a modern trainer would try to get him to 210-215 lbs. Not that it makes any odds. He would walk through anybody in the top 10 today at 190.
What people dont seem to get their heads round here is that there are a lot of physical advantages other than size. Dempsey is faster than Lewis and a better finisher, he is more mobile and frankly more durable. These are also physical advantages.
Amd here's the rub - Neon beat an old over the hill Ali who was rumoured to have thrown the fight and also came back to beat him. Regardless he's as lucky to be in the ring at this time as Foreman was with Moorer. Patterson i respect but lets be honest, he didn't exactly dominate the division and indeed was massacred by the very man his management was keeping him away from.
Under modern rules, Lewis beats Dempsey rather easily by knocking him out. Under the Dempsey era rules, Lewis kills Dempsey. Lewis simply has to knock him down (not hard when you outweigh someone by 60lbs and posees great skill) THEN, Lewis could stand over his fallen opponent and punch him as he tried to get up. This will result in some BRUTAL damage to the Menassa Mauler.
There's no guarantee Dempsey would even beat some of the guys you degrade Lewis for being sub par at finishing, let alone stop them. Lewis would have murdered most of those guys Dempsey was fighting. Poor Billy Miske had weighed 100 pounds at one point before their last fight.
Back to this again. I totally accept that you dont see the fuss over Dempsey, you dont really rate him, that's fair enough. I dont see what others seem to see in Lennox Lewis. I doubt I'm being "seduced by the legend". But that's the way you dismiss a differing opinion. The fact that most Dempsey fans on this board cite aspects of his technique, talent and ability in quite some detail should be enough to show it's genuine appreciation rather than hopeless romanticizing. Of course, we all have different takes on what we see.
