It is not unlikely at all considering the accuracy and combos of Louis.Remember Lewis does get hit as evidenced in the Holyfield and Mercer fights and his chin is average at best.

    It`s a great fantasy encounter!
For me Joe Louis is up there with Ali as one of the greatest heavyweights. Also Schmeling said, that Louis fought like some one from another planet. Louis has beaten everyone in his heydays, except Schmeling I. But Louis was just 21 years old and overconfident. Schmeling was experienced, in great shape and had a strategy. Louis was still tough to finish for Schmeling after he took countless right hands. Louis had almost recovered from the first knockdown, but then Schmeling landed a power punch after bell round 5.

So Schmeling was the only one, who has beaten young Louis. I think Schmeling was a really good one and is often underrated. After his defeats against Max Baer and Steve Hamas people thought, that he was already washed up. Schmeling said also, he had a hard time with Baer, cause he was able to see his punches, but he was not able to use his reflexes to avoid them. His legs were heavy and the temperature during the fight was very high, cause it was in summer. Afterwards Schmeling had a depressing time. Later he came back with a winning streak.
But nothing against Baers strong performance, I just think that Schmeling was able to beat everyone on a good day at that time. He was just sometimes inconstant (similar to Sharkey).

Okay back to Louis. He was also a tremendous fighter. He outpointed a really tough boxer like Tommy Farr just by using his left hand, after a right hand injury. Louis has beaten also Bob Pastor twice. Pastor has beaten some of the best black contenders in that era, which were deprived of title shots (except John Henry Lewis)

Okay, but back to the matchup. I just think it was an interesting boxing period.
I think Louis would be a dangerous opponent for Lewis. Lewis would have to be really careful and aware, but then I would favour Lewis, especially the older one (for exemple when he fought Rahman II). He was just a more modern fighter with awesome footwork for a big man and he could dominate fights from the distance with his jab and his size advantages. Lennox Lewis was also a really great one and he was steadily improving, especially with Emanuel Steward as trainer. Lewis said once: "I am a late bloomer". So the young Lewis would be probably an easier opponent for Joe Louis.

A more modern Joe Louis, born 1965 like Lewis, taller and heavier is another story. But that`s also far to hypothetical. Louis was a child of his time and also Jack Blackburn had a big influence on him.

I do think that Holyfield was more durable, but Louis was very durable himself and he was better defensively (and offensively) than Evander who had his best years behind him during Lennox fights.

Joe was getting hurt and dropped by fighters in an era where heavyweights were much smaller and didn’t have near the power of Lewis. I can’t see him taking that kind of power

This is easy to Google-or if you have watched any part of their extremely famous fights, you can see that Schmelling is only close to the size of Louis.
A great guy, Louis & he visited each other across the pond every year, helped pay for The Brown Bomber's funeral expenses, lived to 99...
    Schmelling was 6' 1" & under 195 lbs.
This is around the weight of most LHWs in ring weight for the last few decades.
And as pointed out already, Lewis was much better.
You are comparing a world class level fighter from the 1930's vs. a huge modern ATG fighter.

While Louis would have a chance, there is a reason nobody near his prime weight (a little more) has been champion since Holyfield.
And he did not beat anyone in the class of prime Lewis until he fought Bowe for the second time-but by then he had bulked up.

It is a big ask for Louis to beat a huge, top ATG like Lewis.

I don't consider that as "many". His counter punching would be somewhat stifled against a guy 3 1/2" taller with 8" more reach against a guy with a very good jab who knew how to fight big and could actually fight.

How would you describe the varied styles or Louis? I know him as more of a stalker than anything and didn't think this overly morphed into multiple other styles?

Lewis could either utilize his size and right carefully or he could be aggressive and blow you away. What extra styles does Joe have?

Pretty sure your wrong. Louis had the power change a fight at anytime. The fact that he is a combination puncher makes him even harder to beat. If Lennox even stumbled Louis would probably finish him. Let's be serious Lewis was a fine champion but he was iced by single shots twice and your telling me Joe Louis can't freeze him with a well placed punch?

You must be joking. Anyway I did pick Lennox Lewis to win but it's no lock..

Joe Louis took power from Buddy Baer who was bigger than Lennox and he might punch harder.

Sorry, "Max" might have given it away you'd think.

Lewis would however be a completely different animal. Not that i'd base anything on Louis losing to Schmeling as it's well known Louis had a terrible camp and learnt lessons he'd never forget.
