Just thought up this match up. Very interesting clash between two different eras. How do you think the Lewis of the super heavyweight era would do against Joe Louis of the 30's. Personally its hard for me to picture this match up. I see it being a battle of the jabs, I often pick modern heavyweights over the older heavyweights because of their size and the improvements from generation to generation buts it different with Joe Louis his combination punching may be the best I've ever seen. I think Lewis may be a head perhaps even getting a knock down but I picture Joe Louis at some getting home with a right hand that puts Lewis's lights out. What do you guys think?
It's modern day Lewis for me. While Joe is a legend, that I believe was for his time. The fighters he were defeating were a similar weight and height. I believe lennox just as skilful but with size and weight advantage to so I can a hard fought match but with Lewis getting the harder punches in. Joe would bravely try to get his killer punches in but I see a similar ending to the Lewis_phil Jackson fight ending around the 8th With both men faces showing the signs of battle
Hard to call a fight between guys so far apart in era's. I remember old timers telling me how great Louis was,a bit like me talking to someone younger now about Ali.
Probably Lewis if he's at his best. But on the other hand old Holyfield gave Lewis a run for his money, so odds are so would Louis. Rethinking it. This is actually quite close. Louis had the jab and the firepower.
Joe Louis got rocked by 190 pound fighters or less. Even guys like Billy Conn who was a natural 160 pound fighter who couldn't punch her Joe Louis. Lewis was only hurt by 230 pounds. Louis was slow footed and couldn't box. Lewis by brutal early round KO.
The people that say Joe Louis forget that, the fact is he was hurt by conn, dropped by Braddock and galento and knocked out by schmeling. Lewis, foreman tyson and Holmes would all I believe stop him. I have a lot of respect for Joe but I don't see him defeating the modern day great s
I find it hard picking against Louis because of his precision and patience. He also had Incredible footwork, against a SHW he looks really quick footed. That right hand counter McCall landed could easily come from the fist of Louis. Lewis is an incredible talent though, he's amongst the 100 most skilled fighters all time and he has a huge weight advantage to boot. The thing is, reach only play a point to a certain degree, in a boxing match Louis won't beat Lewis from the outside, but he can reach his chin from range, only Ali has the kind of reflexes I think are required to avoid the bombs of Louis.
I assume the people saying Louis have all seen his filmed fights therefore would know about the losses you mention. But those greats you mention all suffered defeats to people less skilled than Louis. And is Foreman a modern day great?
These two guys were both great fighters. Joe Louis had pretty much everything except good mobility but that was because he stayed in position to punch almost all of the time. Lewis on the other hand had a great punch, speed for a shw, fantastic mobility for a shw, and an atg jab (so does Louis). From what I have seen, I would expect Lewis to win a good amount of rds because he has the power to keep Louis honest. However as the fight gets into the second half Louis gains more and more momentum then takes Lewis by knockout somewhere around the 11th or 12th sooner if it is over 12.
Still doesn't take away from the fact that he was knocked down by the guys I mentioned and out by schmeling. Yes he s a great fighter, a legendary one but would he defeat a talented, more powerful stronger heavyweight like Lewis? No. Athletes are breaking records and getting better all the time as years go by. So why not heavyweight s. Or is there special cases....
And foremen was a great fighter for his time. When he came back by he struggled to beat a top ten heavyweight. Because he'd had his time but in his prime he was a beast.
I think that Louis took a punch better than Lewis to be honest. He was only actually stopped by Schmeling and Marciano, and they both had to throw everything but the kitchen sink at him. They are both underrated in this department, because they were both scarily tough fighters, who were prepared to go to war with anybody.
Louis was that bit more instinctive, and is able to either stop lennox late as his concentration drops, or take a split decision win with that extra bit of tank he carries..
