Golota landed 71 punch (60+ power punches) in round 2 of the 2nd fight. If you take 60+ power punches from a 240+ guy like Golota in 3 minutes, it's more than enough to put you on the stretcher if your chin isn't good.
He was floored once by Holyfield, as I recall. In their 3rd fight, where Bowe battled back to stop Evander. He was staggered quite a few times, but 2 of their 3 fights were brutal wars, and the more tactical encounter had more than its fair share of fireworks.
Bowe's heart is unquestioned, but everytime he got hit in the face he got wobbled and a solid puncher will smell blood when he has a guy wobbled. He was too brave and fool hardy for his own good, for such a big guy with a big weight advantage, reach advantage, height advantage he should have predominantly fought from the outside and only fought on the inside when the situation rely meritted it and last but not least he should have worked on his defensive skills which were very shockingly poor and a major reason why his career was very shortlived. Bowe badly underestimated Golata in that fight and in hindsight i wonder if he would have taken it in the first place.
Honestly, I don't know how Bowe absorbed that type of punishment, and he still managed to dish out a good deal as well. I always believe people tend to underrate the sheer brutality on display in that rematch. It was mind boggling stuff, all around. I always wonder how things would have unfolded if Golota scored that 2nd round stoppage. Unfortunately he lost his cool with that headbutt, which cost him dearly. Had he taken a quick moment to catch his breath and regain his composure, he may have been able to muster up another flurry that finishes Bowe. Golota's career may have panned out differently, and Bowe, ironically, may have still had something to offer.
I think Lewis would have been kayo'd pre-Stewart, and it would have happened in the first two or three rounds. Bowe hit harder than either McCall or Hasim imo, and Bowe obviously would been WAYYY up for this. Post-Stewart I see Lewis stopping him by the 9th (though Lewis might get knocked down on the way).
Bowe was far more fluid offensively than Lewis, I believe had they met at the time that Bowe trashed the belt he may have had good chance to beat Lewis. On the other side Bowe had a low ring IQ often, giving away his advantages in fights and he was hit all the time. Holyfield, Golota, Coetzer etc all tagged him at will, Bowe really didn't face many punchers for a reason.
That may be the strangest fight I've ever seen. Why would you repeatedly foul a guy intentionally when you're comfortably winning?
Yeah, one of the few things I'm confident of here is that this fight is really time sensitive and could have very different outcomes within just a two or three year time bracket. The other thing I'm confident of is that Lewis was much more self-assured than Bowe regarding a prospective match, whether justifiably or not.
I think Lewis' cheekiness was completely unwarranted before his teaming with Steward; Lewis got knocked out by lesser puncher/fighters than Bowe (I correct that last, MUCH lesser fighters than Bowe), and Bowe would have been This content is protected amped up for it. Futch I think took a good share of the blame, way too protective of the man whom might have dominated 90s heavyweight boxing in a big way.
He did get hit too much. But Lewis also got hit...sometimes at exactly the wrong time for him. For pre-McCall Lewis I think that would have spelled LL's end. That said, I think LL's right would have freaking demoed Riddick in the late 90s.
1992 to 1993 - Riddick Bowe KO, great fight that Bowe wins, more schooled at this point 1994 to 1995 - Incredible fight, I'd give it to Lewis UD, but a true 50-50. 1996 onward - Lewis KO and it isn't pretty. Prime for Prime - One of the best fights ever, Lewis imo wins a UD, Bowe could Upset him
If it had been Lewis in the ring with Bowe at the time of the Golata 2 fight landing 60 power punches we'd have a corpse on our hands
